-----------

Unfortunately you have to subscribe to "Sterne und Weltraum" to read most of its articles, but I did learn that there are a couple of satellites out there who are supposed to search for trapped asteroids in the Lagrange-points (some points with gravity equilibrium where you might 'park' a satellite - but maybe not if there already is a slab of rock there). I have also found the homepage http://www.wissenschaft-online.de with a lot of scientific articles in German, and even with a dictionary (including ENG<-->GER))

And then I have been listening to concertos by the Spanish composer Rodrigo, who continued to write beautiful music in spite of living in a century where most composers strived make ugly 'progressive' music for a minor group of masochists (not my cup of tea, as you might imagine). His music is very typically Spanish, i.e. Spanish guitars and a clear influence from the gipsies of Andalucia - who in their turn certainly were influenced by the Moors who occupied the peninsula for almost a milennium). The funny thing is that you can hear the special Spanish character in pieces way back (I refer to Mudarra in the 1500s and father Soler in the 1700s). This tradition lives on for instance in the recordings of Paco de Lucia.

When people mention music here in this forum they rarely refer to classical instrumental music, but when I occasionally don't watch television I do like to listen to that kind of music, and it is my definite impression that it is beneficial to listen to music from a country where your target language is spoken while you are working with it - like Bach for German, Rameau for French, Rodrigo for Spanish and Tschaikovskij for Russian (though in the latter case it hasn't wrought miracles yet).

-------------

The instrument of the Fandango by reverend A.Soler is in Spanish called a "clavicembalo", in several other language a "cembalo" but mostly a harpsichord in English. In an ordinary piano or pianoforte there are small hammers that strike the strings through as very complicated mechanism. In a harpsichord/cembalo there is a little spine that plucks the string, and the resulting sound is much more hard and brilliant. The instrument played by the lady (who had studied this fandango for an exam, according to Youtube) has two keyboards, but there are also smaller ones with one keybord. I chose this particular version because it is the most wild one I know, - in my own collection I have the one by Kipnis which is also quite vigorous. There is a version for two guitars on youtube (link above), but it is slower and by far not as exhilarating.

---------

If I hadn't the internet I would have problems getting the opportunity to listen to languages like Romanian, Icelandic, Catalan and Portuguese (unless I deliberately started a hunt for emigrants with relevant languages). But luckily I've got access to hundreds of internet-channels through wwitv.com - not the only portal who offers this service, but in my opinion by far the best one.

Tonight I have listened to a TV show in Romanian from Antena 1 with a 'sexual astrologist', a woman who waffled up and down and back and forth about an asteroid named Lilith, which apparently does exist. But it beats my mind how anybody can seriouisly believe that a rambling piece of rock somewhere in the universe can have any influence on the sexlife of people in Transsylvania or elsewhere. The only thing that sets this particular pebble apart from thousands of other asteroid is it name, which by some people has been seen as the name of Adam's first wife (who has been assumed to be more independent, sexy and strong than wimpy apple-eating Eve). It goes to show the sound mind of the studie audience that they were all but rolling on the floor laughing themselves to pieces during some of the lady's more preposterous announcements.

Such programs are made to appeal to native speakers, i.e. they are only relevant for people who already are quite advanced in their target language, - but it would certainly be nice if there were some easy programs for beginners and intermediates. If you are just on the brink of being able to understand a genuine TV program for natives, then there is a golden rule: DON'T listen for the meaning! - you don't have time for that. Instead make sure that you can distinguish every single word and every inflection. If you know enough words and constructions then the meaning will automatically pop up into your head, - otherwise you just have to study some more. Those who try to catch a word here and there in the hope of being able to guess the meaning are just cheating themselves - although in a pinch it can be useful to be able to do this during travels in places where you don't know the language. But it is still cheating. And in this case it is yourself that you are cheating.
