I just noticed that the number of views for this log has passed 3.500.000. But I have stopped trying to understand these numbers. Maybe it is a bot somewhere that pumps up the visitor numbers.

My writing spell goes on unabated, and I get around both a number of reseach papers which I have consulted earlier, some new ones and parts of my own writings here which I had forgoten long ago. Right now I'm at the stage where the next subject is my wordlist setup, but the chapters I have written about vocabulary learning I have written yesterday evening are almost completely new - they have more in common with my lecture in Novi Sad than with the things I had to say about the topic in 2009 and before. I wrote something about wordlists faily recently (20 December 2014) in ths thread, and I think it will be logical to incorporate that in the upcoming description of the method - rather than publishing one more revised version of the explanations in the Wikia or the original text from the Guide.

I have now written everything except the section about grammar, two chapters at the end of the section about translation and one short one about multiple languages and study plans which will be the last in the whole thing - and the estimate of a total around 110-120 pages still holds. With a bit of luck I can finish the writing process during the coming weekend. After that I'll read the whole thing through and maybe change some details, but that shouldn't take long. If I can achieve that then I'll have written a full book in 2 weeks - in spite of a fulltime job and a weekend spent with my family. And the majority og the 77 pages MS Word pages I have written so far are new so it isn't just a question of revising the existing guide.

There was one and only one reference I simply couldn't find again: I once saw a collection of standard symbols to be used in hyperliteral translations in scientific articles, but maybe that system isn't used very much since it is so hard to find the symbol list again. But I have been able to find a fair number of other interesting things, inccluding some research reports, which I have seen during my period here at HTLAL sicne the guide was compiled in 2009, but not used. So maybe I have been lax about working with my foreign languages except English, but I have definitely learnt some science!

PS: I haven't had time to compile a new umbrella thread.

The *B*O*O*K* is finished and I have even found time to revise a couple of columns from a Russian wordlists which I started after my return from Spain. But then I got an idea for the last chapter in the book, and then I just finished it - 99 pages and 53.442 words all in all. Not as long as a standard novel (according to this article), but long enough. And longer than some noteworthy writings according to this source, which is based on word counts from Amazon - it states that "Brave New World" with 64.531 words is spot on in the center. I haven't been able to find figures for non-literary works.

Time for some real studying...

Yesterday evening I had once again time for some study, and I got through the Bruckner symphonies no. 0,1,2 on tape and part of no. 5 on TV (only 2 movements because I also wanted to watch a program about luxury hotel concierges with speech in several languages), besides some English, Polish and Serbian TV.

I still haven't reread my book - when I returned from Spain I first spent a week or so on ordering my photos and things like that, and then I spent something like one and a half week writing the *B*O*O*O*K* - and during that time I hardly had any free time left for language studies. But now I have finally been able to devote a couple of evenings to intensive text studies and wordlists and the symphonies of Anton Bruckner.

Yesterday I concentrated on a few languages, namely Polish, Russian, Greek, Spanish and Indonesian. Plus a little bit of TV from Norway (something about less visited tourist destinations). And also some pages in Kauderwelsh Lithuanian in German before getting to sleep, but I count that as extensive reading.

I found one unread article from the site m.lifo.gr about the astrolabium (or whatever you choose to call it) from Antikythera and a man who has studied it. I have always found it extremely tragic that we have got so many texts by the overvalued Platon and his pupil Aristoteles, who contrary til Platon wrote about scientific themes but made wrong guesses about just about everything... but we have very few original texts about or written by the true heroes of the time, like the anonymous inventor of the Antikythera gizmo. At least we know people like Hipparchos and Archimedes by name, but I would have preferred some more knowledge about their methods and knowledge and less from the pen (of whatever writing utensil he used) of the otherwise uninteresting biographer of Mr. Socrates.

Apart from that I finished the machine translated paleontological text in Indonesian, studied a page in the polyglot book of Spivak and one page in my quaint pld Polish textbook, but then turned my attention to Polish and Spanish wordlists - 150 Spanish words and somewhat less in Polish.

I have been fairly active studying languages the last week (after several weeks spent on family visits, travels, organizing travel memorabilia and writing a book), and yesterday - the first day used almost exclusively on studying - I got through so much stuff that it would take to long to repeat it all.

Let's start with TV:

EN: BBC HD had a program mostly about the meteorological systems of the Earth, and I both watched and listened to this program, but I had some music running from my own old tapes while its sister channel showed four QI's in a row - all rebroadcasts, but irresistible.

Extensive reading? Well, not much - apart from the daily newspaper and some pages in a Spanish magazine (see below). But intensive text studies in several languages:

I did also quite a lot on work with wordlists and one word count. Actually I'm not in the middle of the word counting season, but when I worked on Serbian vocabulary last year I found som quite interesting figures by doing wordcounts on the part of the alphabet which I had been through doing wordlists and the part I hadn't reached yet. In Serbian I started out at a very low level (basically the level where I could recognize the words from Russian and other languages). In contrast I began learning Spanish in the late 60s, but nevertheless I asked myself which effect my recent Spanish wordlist campaign has got on my general level. This campaign started at 'p' so I took two pages from the first half of the dictionary and two from the last one and calculted some percentages. In the 'unprepared' part I found 104 known, 19 dubious and 31 unknown words, i.e. 67%, 12% and 21% unknown words. In the 'prepared' part I got 63 known, 13 dubious and 13 unknown words, which yields 81% known, 10% dubious and 10% nknown words. Now the dictionary I used is quite small (around 12.000 words), but even with this small sample I would say that my campaign has been a success. And I know from other experiments that the effect isn't limited to the words I have included in my wordlists.

An' da book? Well, I should really proofread it today, but somehow I feel more like studying than proofreading. I have saved the file in three formats. With doc (word 2003) it took up more than 21 mB, with docx 16mB and with pdf just around 3½ mB. But I have been reading some things on the internet that suggest that the pdf format can be a little bit too inflexible on eBook readers, and on the other hand the special free ebook format up-something can probably not be read on ordinary computers, so I'm somewhat confused right now about what to do.

Most e-readers can read the .epub format, this goes for computer users as well. If you really want to make it accessible by everyone, then I would suggest you save it as HTML.

You could upload the book to the restricted area of this forum first and ask for
corrections before you make it publicly available. One proof-reader alone never finds all
mistakes, especially if he's the author.

And epub would seem like a good choice. It's relatively easy to convert ePubs to other
formats using the free tool calibre in case one has the need to (like Kindle users). PDFs
are a bit of a mess i that regard.
