ENG: Went I returned home from work I switched on my TV set and found a program at National Geographic about the problems that hurricane Katrina caused for the Audubon zoo and Aquarium of New Orleans and the Aquarium of Gulfport, all places that I visited in the 90s. They survived (barely).

Tornava la cabeça e estavalos catando;
Vio puertas abiertas e uços sin cañados,
alcandaras vazias, sin pielles e sin mantos,
e sin falcones e sin adtores mudados.
Sospiro Mio Cid, ca mucho avie grandes cuidados.
Fablo mio Cid bien e tan mesurado:
»Esto me an buelto mios enemigos malos.»

-----------

First I saw a program about the calamities that hurricane Katrina caused for the Zoo and Aquarium of New Orleans and the Aquarium of Gulfport, - I have visited all three places. Then a program in mixted English, English with accent and Spanish (and too much singing and music). The protagonist was a musician walking the Cammino de Santiago in Spain, and the chevaleresque allusions therein inspired me to check out the famous "Cantar del Mio Cid", the poem that inaugurated the Spanish literature. I quote a passage in the beginning, and the same passage is recited at the end of a clip in Youtube ... ahem, did I say the SAME passage? Not really, because the actors don't follow the canonical text, cfr. my transcription above. Luckily for them the authors rights have expired.. And while I read about don Cid - a Spanish national hero from the earliest phase of the expulsion of the Arabs - I watched a program from the zoo of Munich, Hellabrunn. I like zoos, and I also like listening to the very different ways to speak German - brrrrraaf (brav), guuuuort (gut) ...

And finally ... a Danish comedian on the subject of school systems in different countries (original version here)

DE: "El Cantar de mio Cid" ist mir vom Studium her bekannt.

-----

I have been to the library today, and among the books I have borrowed is one about Norway and its kings from 800 to 1130. Norway was unified under Harald Hårfager (Harald 'pretty-hair') who swore that he wouldn't cut his hair until the job was done (which reminds me of Isabella of Castile who swore that she wouldn't change her underpants before the Arabs had been expelled from the peninsula - which explains why painters have at their disposal a dark yellow colour named Isabella yellow). Later Norwegian kings include Olav Trygvason and Olav the Fat, who was a fanatical murderous evangelizer (so he was canonized under the name "Olav den Hellige").

But the last true viking king was Harald Hårderåde ('hard-governing') who sailed to England in 1066 to beat king Harold Godwinson, who had just taking over after the wimp Edward the Confessor - and maybe with some rather dubious credentials for doing so. Never mind, Harald Hårderåde lost the battle and his life at Stamford Bridge. But then Harold and his exhausted troops had to hurry South to meet the army of William the Conqueror, and that was just too much: Harold lost the battle at Hastings and his life, after which the Normans took over the whole country and basically ruined the local culture. So without the untimely visite by Harald Hårderåde there is a fair chance that the Normans had lost, and then Modern English could have been a modernized kind of Anglosaxon. The same would probably have happened if Harald Hårderåde had won the battle at Stamford Bridge - Anglosaxon with a Norwegian accent, how about it?
