Not great enough.

Ironically the birds became Jar-Ptitsa's bane. I had not expected this, but three woodpeckers in another thread settled her fate. First she was muzzled, but it was pointed out that this would disrupt the logic in many discussions, including this thread where she has been a very active contributor. So the final solution is that her account will be closed, but her posts will remain visible. Personally I find that this is a better solution. So if you like fanciful pictures then enjoy those above, - they will be the last ones in the series.

I have spent the weekend partly organizing my travel reports from the Balkans (a month after my return!), partly transferring the content of the magazine of my travel club to files which I now have to upload to the internet. Of course I have been listening to TV and internet TV, but mostly in English - not least lectures from the Ted.com site on a variety of subjects ranging from the organization of our brain to the grand scale structure of the universe. In between I have of course also listened to programs in other languages, such as a couple of those excellent music-free nature programs from Swedish TV, but not much that needs to be discussed here. So I return later with something more substantial.

Thanks for this Danish report with hyperliterals. Interesting word: solformörkelse! This word is not related to other languages I know.

"mørk" = dark
"formørke" = make dark
"solformørkelse" = the Sun made dark (by the Moon)

another word in the same group:

"åndsformørkelse" = the situation where the mind has become dark (slightly jesting)

ESP: Iversen, via "Cyrillic Games Thread" estas tre bona ideo. Do kelkfoje mi ekzercas legi la cyrilan vortojn.

Ekzistas ankaux "aligatori" kaj "kajmani", sed tiujn vortojn mi cxiam mem konfuzas.

Mi gxojis, ke mi dum unu tago povis multe paroli Esperanton.

Esperanto" - ĉi tiu signifas "kiam du personoj kun malsamaj denaskaj lingvoj parolas trian lingvon reciproke".

----------

I studied Russian for much of the evening, but I'm not going to write anything in that language right now. Instead I'll just mention that I watched a program that was called "Prison choir" at TVE (in Spanish), - but there was no prison invlved in the section I watched. Instead it was a discussion about forensic medicine, but actually the bones that were shown were quite old - such as a 1500 year old Visigoth scull with the top missing (it will be difficult to find the perpetrator now!). Then they actually started to sing, and I zapped away.

Earlier that evening I watched a portrait of a Polish barber who had had his own barber shop in St. Pauli in Hamburg for something like 30 years. Now his customers were mainly elderly male patrons, and everything else in his shop also were a testimony to a long gone epoch, where everything was much nicer - especially in St. Pauli. Maybe I should mention that St. Pauli in general and Reeperbahn in particular was the entertainment area in Hamburg for many years, with everything from variety theatres (and noble barber shops like Harry's) to red light bordellos and rampant street prostitution. Now it has become more sedate and boring.

The content of the section in Esperanto will be explained more clearly in the next couple of posts.

ESP: Pri gavialo mi neniam auxdis. Kio estas la "malnova mundo"? Afriko? En Euxropo ja ne vivas krokodiloj.

1. Do se mi parolas Germane kun Germano, tio estas krokodili.

----------

This time I have just quoted the Esperantean version of Wikipedia, so let me add that I have a feeling that some idle Esperantists have had a lot of fun making up some words at a long forgotten congress. I have no idea whether actual living people use these words in the year 2009, but here are the explanations for those of you who feel 'gavialized':

to 'crocodile': this is when for instance two Germans speak German instead of Esperanto (my Esperanto-Danish dictionary adds the requirement that you do this to shut somebody else out of the conversation (as if speaking Esperanto would be better)

to 'alligator': this is when for instance a German and a Dutch speak German instead of Esperanto

to 'kajman': this is when a German and an Italian speak French instead of Esperanto

to 'gavial': this when a German and a Dane write (or speak) in Esperanto to avoid that anybody else understands what those two are discussing

to 'lizard': this is when people commit treason by speaking another conlang than Esperanto

to 'reptile' is to do one of the things mentioned above
