Once again I haven't had time to write here earlier in the evening, but I have continued my studies of Bahasa, using my bilingual printouts. And from a situation where I had to check every single word in the dictionary I am getting nearer to a situation where I can recognize at least a few of the most common words. In many cases their use and meaning cross our Western wordclass boundaries.

Take for instance the word "juka", which according to the dictionary is a conjunction that means "if, should". Is "should" a conjunction?? The word occurred in this passage: "Orang sini, jika ditanya, (...)", ("people here, if asked, ..."), clearly with the meaning "if". "Should" might be used in concessive expressions like "should it happen", but then the whole expression is probably the correct translation of "jika". By the way, "ditinya" is not in my dictionary, so here I have to trust Google translate.

Even more cryptic is the explanation of the word "yang": "conj that, which, who; - biru the blue one, - laly (yl) in the past, - akan datang (yad) in the future".

It is clear what "yang" in isolation as a conjunction (or rather relative pronoun) is. But its role in the expressions baffles me, - and this is not the only case where a word seems to adopt a totally different identity when used in an expression. However even with these reservations I still think that Bahasa is a relatively benign language to learn.

A propos expressions, I moved and revised the message about expressions in my Guide to Learning Languages. It has now become message 11 in Part 4 under the title "Learning idiomatic expressions (and 'chunks')".

And finally I have found time to work my way through one more passage in my Russian history book: the account of the destruction of the Rjazan Rus by the Mongols.

The Mongols attacked the Ryazan capital* in 1237, and when the defense broke down after 5 days of desperate fight the Mongols murdered every single living being in the town. However a Ryazan nobleman assembled a group of 500 warriors, the socalled 'Bogatyrs', and they killed a surprising amount of Mongols - though unfortunately not the khan himself, Batu (one of the heirs of Djengis Khan). The Russian composer Glière has written an hourlong symphony about these events, but apart from that the Ryazans sank into total oblivion. Ever heard about them? Probably not.. at least I hadn't. But I found out who the 'Bogatyrs' were.

* now called "Staraya Ryazan", because a new capital was subsequently built which took over the name.

Apparently there are one month intensive courses in Germany for people who want to work in Denmark. The question is: can a German worker really learn Danish in a month? I have never participated in such a course, but I doubt that you can get more than an introduction to the language plus a lot of sentences (and names of instutions, etc.) to be learnt by heart. That is, the same kind of stuff that you find i a language guide, just presented orally too. It may not be wasted time (depending on the teacher and the methods used), but can hardly be more than a beginning.
