-----

You only have to leave your thread alone in this subforum for less than one day before it gets buried under the avalanche of newly opdated log books. But I found mine, and here goes.

I am watching the news from Spanish TVE in this moment for the first time in a week- though I did hear both Italian, Spanish and Portuguese in London. And of course there is a lot about the strengthened security in the airport - not only in USA, but also in Europe (where nude screening will be introduced in several countries). Visitors from certain countries will in the future be subjected to an acribic scrutiny before they can enter the USA, but to balance things aids victims will be allowed on the same terms as other travellers.

En España, los niños pequeños son completamente sfrenatos porque vienen los tres reyes santos - que son más importantes que Papá Noel allí. And in Helsinki in Finland a train has run straight into a railway hotel ...

---------

I have spent some of the evening listening to music of Rimskij-Korsakov and reading some articles about the group he belonged to, "The mighty Heap" (called "de fem", 'the five', in Danish). They wrote some of the prettiest and most melodious music in history, but basically they were all a bunch of amateurs - even though Balakirev had some theoretical grounding and Rimskij-Korsakov later was appointed to a post as conservatory teacher in composition. In fact he didn't know the subject he had to teach, so he had to do a quick selfstudy of musical theory, - and some nasty persons have suggested that he wrote better music before he learned how to do it.

Этим вечером я читал статью о "Могучей кучке" -- группе русских композиторов: Милии Алексеевиче Балакиреве, Александре Порфирьевиче Бородине, Цезаре Антоновиче Кюи, Модесте Петровиче Мусоргском и Николае Андреевиче Римском-Корсакове.

1. "Это вечер" is incorrect, it is need to use "этот".

2. An answer to the question "когда?" (when?) must stay is the instrumental case: "Этим вечером".

3. The group name in Russian is "Могучая кучка", not "куча".

Эти композиторы создали одни из самых красивых и мелодичных произведений в мировой истории; удивительно, но все они, строго говоря, были любителями, хотя Балакирев имел некоторые знания по теории музыки, а Римский-Корсаков стал преподавателем композиции.

1. The word "некоторый" must not be used in the the turn of speech like "один из многих".

2. The word "music" don't have the plural forms in Russian, but the turn of speech "один из..." demands tu use the plural, for example: "Это одна из лучших картин" (This is the one of the best pictures). So I change the word "музыка" to "произведение" (we can understand that this is the music work by the context; without the context it is need to say: "музыкальное произведение").

3. You did the mistake in the word "история" (the bad ending).

4. "но это удивительно, что они все" is formally correct but soungs not good. I change this part of the sentence as you can see. I used ";" between the parts of the sentence because grammatically these parts in fact are the independent sentences.

5. "любителей" has the wrong case. The question is: "Кем они были?" (Who was they?), and in the answer we must to use the instrumental case: "они были любителями". The adjective "музыкальный" in this context must not be used because "музыкальный любитель" = "любитель музыки", i.e. a music lover, not an amateur as opposing to a professional, expert. In addition, "музыкальный любитель" in Russian never used although grammatically this is correct.

6. "узнал некоторые теории музыки" is correct formally, but this is not Russian :) I change this part.

7. The word "учитель" is used as designation of a teacher in an ordinary, common school for children, but the composition is learned in special musical educational institution for adults. About teachers in "adult" educational institution we say "преподаватель".

Quote:
Но удовольствие, что, когда он был назначен, он действительно ничего не знал о том, чего пришлось учить - он может даже научиться их поспешно!

Hmmm... "Удовольствие" is incorrect in this context but I don't understand what you want to say with this word, maybe "surprising"?

Удивительно, что, когда он был назначен, он в действительности ничего не знал о том, чему он должен учить, и ему пришлось срочно изучить музыкальную теорию.

1. It is difficult to explain for me, but in this case it is need to use "в действительности", not "действительно". "Действительно" is used often, but it has the "booster" meaining in comparsion with "в действительности" (the last one is more neutral form for "really").

2. "чего" is incorrect. He must to teach other people, therefore it is need to use "чему". "чему пришлось учить" is correct, but it is better to say "чему он должен (был) учить".

3. The last part of the sentence is incorrect although all the word is correct. I change this part.

The surname is "Кюи". It isn't Russian word, and it must not to decline because it has the masc.gender, but it isn't the ending "-и" for masc.nom.sing. in Russian. As opposite, your name "Иверсен" must be declinated because formally it equivalent to Russian masc. nouns in nom.sing. with the null ending: "стол - стола - столу" etc.

Quote:
Мусоргский рано умер от алкоголизма, а Бородин - кто был известный врач - даже не было времени, чтобы закончить свою оперу Игоря и его симфоний - другие были вынуждены делать это за него.

Мусоргский рано умер от алкоголизма, а Бородин, бывший известным врачом, даже не имел времени, чтобы закончить свою оперу "Князь Игорь" и симфонии, и другие были вынуждены сделать это за него.

1. Hmm... Probably, you translate this sentence from somelike "Borodin who was the well-known doctor" and because use "кто". But right translation is "который": "Бородин, который был известным врачом, ...", or more simple: "Бородин, бывший известным врачом". And it is need to use the instrumental case after "был/бывший".

2. "Бородин" is the subject in this sentence. He don't have time: "Бородин (даже) не имел времени". "Не было времени" can be used in the impersonal sentence: "У Бородина не было времени" (the subject is absent).

3. "свою оперу Игоря и его симфоний". "Игорь" (more exact "Князь Игорь") is the name of the opera, and it is need to enclose it in quotes. Because you use the common word "опера" you must use the name of this opera in nom.: "свою оперу "Князь Игорь"". Without "опера" it is need to declinate the name: "своего "Князя Игоря"" ("своего" because "князь" and "Игорь" is masc.gender, not fem. as "опера"). "Его" is incorrect, you must use "свои". Because the "свой" already was used (before opera), you can (and even must) to skip it: "свою оперу "Князь Игорь" и симфонии".

4. You must use "сделать", not "делать" because the work has been done

Только Н.А. Римский-Корсаков, первоначально бывший офицером (который первоначально был офицером), получил постоянную должность, чтобы заниматься музыкой, и злые языки утверждают, что он написал лучшую музыку, прежде чем изучил теорию музыки.

1. "- первоначально офицер -" is correct, but it is better to say as I do.

2. "позиция" in Russian has senses "geographical location", "item of contract or pricelist", "position of switch" etc, but it never used in sense "have a position in office" etc. In this sense it is need to use "должность" or "работа".

3. Probably, it is more correct to say "он получил постоянную должность, _связанную_ с музыкой".

4. "прежде чем он узнал теории музыки". "узнал" is correct, but it is better to use "изучил": this word has more "scientific" sense. "теории" is incorrect in this case: in plural this word is used when we speak about several theories ("теория профессора А. и теория профессора Б." = "теории профессоров А. и Б.").

P.S. It is interesting for to know what you listen? I have only 3 opera of Rimsky-Korsakov.

SP: Acabo de leer este hilo sobre de las nuevas restricciónes seguridades , y me parece raro que Cuba sea incluido en los países restrictos. No estoy seguro por qué.

I've just read your thread about the new security restrictions, and it seems odd that Cuba is included in the restricted countries. I'm not sure why.

Thanks SII for the corrections.

Is нуждается always used with the prepositional case, and нужно with the dative ?
