ESP: Multe pli klare, dankon Lumulo.

Korektoj:

pli bone: "impresis min"
pli bone: "via klarigo"

MIAJ ESPERANTO-VORTAROJ

Por 95 % mi uzas por Esperanto mian nederlandan dulingvan vortraron:

Nederland-Esperanto-Nederlands Woordenboek de Petro de Smet (el Flandrio), Flandra Esperanto-Ligo, Antverpeno 2004

Nur tre malofte, kiam mi volas ion specialan kontroli rilate al la Germana lingvo, mi uzas

Esperanto-Deutsch, Deutsch-Esperanto de Franz Okelmann, Bayreuth, 1993 / 1996
(2 libroj)

Plena Ilustrita Vortaro (cxiuj esperantistoj nomas gxin "PIV"), monolingva, SAT, Paris, 1987.

--------

Speaking about dictionaries. As I wrote Friday I brought several books in and about Esperanto back from the library (mostly from the cellar where all the dusty old books are stored). However I brought a DA-ESP dictionary, but forgot to take an ESP-DA dictionary, and when I discovered that it was to late to return, So I sat down to read a text book by a certain L.Friis, who was a big name in Danish Esperantist circles in the fifties. It turned out to be a book destined for advanced students, but then at least I won't get bored. The funny thing is that while reading the preface (in Esperanto) I suddenly remembered that I had once bought an Esperanto-English dictionary. I found it between my souvenir Teach Yourself's for languages that I never intended to learn (Samoan, Turkish, Erse, Swahili) - and it was in fact a reasonably comprehensive two-way dictionary published by Teach Yourself. So in a sense I got a belated Christmas gift from myself.

I haven't been able to dedicate as much time to Esperanto as I intended, - for instance I am the webmaster and registry keeper of my travelclub which meant that I had to deal with scores of e-mails just from the period between Christmas and New year. I have also read some texts in Afrikaans and Portuguese from travel magazines, and I have been working on the usual assortment of texts from GLOSS, including something about a strange Russian town where swearing has been outlawed and is punished severely. I may write something about this rather surprising social experiment later, but right now I just want to get back to Mr.Friis and a bit of Esperanto. After all, I had expected to be fluent in that language by now, but now I probably also have to reserve the upcoming weekend for the purpose. (<-- irony)

EDIT. I solemnly promise to stop using non-existant compound perfects in Esperanto, -I had seen the following series of compound passive constructions and guessed that the same construction would function as perfects if used with 'havi'. And maybe they would, but Zamenhof just didn't allow that construction. This sort of irrational behaviour is also common in natural languages, so in a way it just underlines that Esperanto should be treated as any other language - i.e. as a pile of past errors and ideosyncracies that somehow got accepted in a community.

ENG: Thank you Iversen for your English translation, your Esperanto was not totally clear to me, therefore it's me now, who needs your English translation. There are some major mistakes in it, therefore I have had some comprehension problems.

Let me correct only the main errors:

1. parlante de vortraroj
2. mi prunteprenis kelkajn Esperanto librojn

Iversen wrote "mi havis pruntit" = please don't use such a form!

- Esperanto has no such tense as perfectum!!! You should formulate everything which happend in the past with the -is tense. Please check this in an Esperanto grammar book: mi legis la libron, mi estis leganta la libron (gleichzeitig), mi estis leginta la libron (vorzeitig), mi estis legonta la libron (nachzeitig).

LUMULO, could you please give Iversen some extra explanations on this grammar topic, because your Esperanto grammar knowledge is more sophisticated than mine is?

6. e-mail = "retmesagxo" en Esperanto
7. skribis

ENG: With interest I have remarked the fact that you have had the chance to visit "Deutsches Museum" (of natural sciences) in Munich. I visited this fascinating museum, too when I was a child of 11-12 years old together with my parents. I found this museum really interesting and I also wanted to visit the planetarium there, but my parents - like so often - said to me "This is not important", so I didn't get the chance then.

       Aktiva: -inta, -anta, -onta
       Pasiva: -ita,   -ata,   -ota &nbs p;   &nb sp;   &n bsp;

Ekzemple:

Aktivaj participoj

Mi estis manĝinta la kukon. (La kuko estis jam manĝita de mi pasintece; I had eaten the cake)

Mi estas manĝinta la kukon. (La kukon mi ĵus finmanĝis; I recentely ate the cake)

Mi estos manĝinta la kukon. (En la estonteco la kuko jam estos manĝita de mi; In the future I will already have eaten the cake)

Ĉio ĉi aplikeblas ankaŭ al la aliaj tempoj- "mi estis manĝanta la kukon" (I was eating the cake), "mi estas manĝanta la kukon" (I'm eating the cake right now), "Mi estas manĝonta la kukon" (I'm going to/about to eat the cake).

Kaj tiel plu- validas ankaŭ por -onta.

   Pasivaj Participoj

                                                                  *

(Having drunk the entire bottle, he felt tipsy)

"Ĉu estas permesate eniri?"

"Estis ordonite, ke ni ekzekutu lin hodiaŭ."

------------------------------------------------------------ ------------------------

Oni ne uzu ĝisnaŭze- certe Esperanto favoras simplecon super komplikecon- tiam, kiam eblas.

ESP: Lumulo kaj precipe Fasulye multe, multe ĉagreni pro mi, post kiam skribis "havis" + participo pasiva. Ĉiuj lingvoj kiujn mi lernis (krom ruso) uzas tian kombinon . Mi divenis per analogio, ke ankaŭ Esperanto havis ĝin, - sed nun mi scias, ke maldivinis. Tiu ne grava estas, ĉar ĉiuj lingvoj havas strangecos, kaj iom post iom oni lernas eviti la kaptilojn. Bone, Esperanto ne havas kunmetitan perfekton aŭ pluskvamperfekton. Esperanto havas sistemon kompleksan, logikan kaj - kiel diras Lumulo - elegantegan, kaj mi intencis lernos ĝin. Sed Zamenhof faris unu lingvon pli malfacilan, tiam melpermesis tian konstrukcion, kiun preskaŭ ĉiuj lingvoj en Evropa uzas - kaj uzas pli kaj pli.

---

Lumulo and (even more) Fasulye are very worried about my mental state because I have used "to have" + the passive perfect participle to form 'compound perfects' in Esperanto. I did that because I presumed that something that exists in all the other languages I know except Russian also would exist in Esperanto. But no, there isn't any compund perfect nor plusquamperfect in that language. Instead Zamenhof devised a system based on "to be" plus passive and active participles with forms for past, present and the future tense. I agree with Lumulo that this is an elegant system and that it will probably serve all reasonable communication purposes. But Zamenhof would have made life easier for his language learners (called the "same-idea'ists", samideanoj) if he hadn't at the same time disallowed a construction that has shown its value by slowly encroaching on the simple past forms in most European languages, in a few cases even pushing them totally out of existence. The funny thing is that by sabotageing his own project of making the language easy to learn he has made it more 'lifelike', - if you learn any natural language you will also have to put up with a lot of irrational perks and quirks. And it is exactly those things that give each language it own individual character.

So much about Esperanto. There are also other languages in the world, such as Portuguese. I have been listening to clips on Youtube, where there is a language specific search function akin to the one in Google. Among other things I stumpled over an interview with the eminent fadista Cristina Branco. Later in the day I read most of a Brasilian travel magazinwe, which I bought as a souvenir in the airport of Rio de Janeiro in 2002. At that time the Brasilian currency had dropped to a fraction of its former value so that most of the travellers in Brazil couldn't afford to travel outside their own country (or maybe to Argentina, where the currency had fared even worse). I felt very sorry for them.

And there is also Russian. I have promised to write about an article in GLOSS describing a place in Russia called Belgorod where swearing has been made illegal. Swearing about someone's mum cost 500 rubles (about 11 € or 17 US$ right now), to say "Go to (some place)" cost 1000 rubles and saying "твою богу душу" (something like "your God's spirit" cost 1500 rubles. The article doesn't mention scatologically and sexually oriented foul language, but I can't imagine that such utterances would be cheaper. And if you continue your evil ways you may go to jail. On the other hand it is still legal to buy a bottle of vodka and get yourself so stoned that you can't even speak, - and probably also cheaper.

In comparison with conditions for swearers in Belgorod our troubles with the foul-language-checker of this forum (for instance in certain Latin verbal forms on -unt) aren't worth speaking about.
