I have actually spent quite a lot of time today on Indonesian and Russian, but in both cases using materials which I have described earlier, so there is not much new to say about those languages.

I still have some unread magazines from Tenerife, but now I'm at least through "Cómo funciona?" ('How does it function' - and yes, it is spelled with a simple question mark). It is located midway between technical magazines and 'pure science'. I have also received three issues of "Scienca Revuo" in one envelope. I paid for them at the congress in July because I was impressed with the fact that one man almost singlehandedly had kept it running for many years, but then I more or less forgot everything about it. Now I have something to read in Esperanto during Christmas - I have long ago finished my stock of Tolkienaj libroj.

And finally I have prepared a fair number of bilingual texts based on articles from the homepage of the Icelandic popular science mag "Lifandi Visindi" (Living knowledge). Actually I could more or less read it without the translation (apart from a few words where a dictionary might be necessary - like "einhverf" 'one-throw' for "autist"), so just for fun the translation is in Swedish - and as usually I have used Google Translate, which means you need to sceptical and not believe everything. I have been thinking about subscribing to the magazine, and the price in Iceland would not have scared me, but I can't see whether they send it abroad, nor what it would cost.

EN: I have watched a long TV program at TF2 about empress Eugénie, married to Napoleon III of France - that was probably the main experience of this evening. Besides I have copied and studied an Icelandic text about the possibility of using computers to find out about the moods and feelings of autists, I have made wordlists based on words collected from the texts in Russian and Bahasa which I have studied the last couple of days, I have copied and studied a couple of pages from my Greek guide to Athens (the chapter about Plaka, which is the entertainment district of Athens and situated right below the Akropolis) and I have made and eaten a heap of pancakes with jam. And please notice, these weren't the thick American breakfast pancakes, but "flat as a pancake" Danish pancakes.

The main howler of this evening was overlooking the 30 years retrospective Superquark program from Italian Raiuno - I just saw the last minute or so, but did notice that the amiable old gentleman who presents the program (and has done so since time immemorial) did mention "la prossima puntata" so apparently he expects the series to continue in the new year. I certainly hope so - with "Passaggio al Nord Oveste" it is one of the few exceptions from the generally miserable programming of that channel.

Yesterday in-the-bus-back-home-from-work I read the magazine "Fotografía Fácil" (Easy Photography). I didn't learn much about photographt, but it is useful to learn the whole 'nomenclature' of a theme by reading such a specialized magazine - and I could see that the number of English loanwords in this Spanish magazine was more limited than it would have been it similar magazines in Danish - particularly in the advertisements. I read for instance an article about the revamping of photos using histogrammes, and even though I have another program for the purpose it is useful to see some genuine Spanish expressions for the actions you can perform on the basis of those curves - in fact I retouch almost all pictures I take, and dragging histogramme curves around is one of the fundamental tools for that purpose - so I should definitely know how to describe the proceedings in more than two languages. Btw. I have a couple of old photomagazines lying around - and you can buy them in almost any major language.

DA: Dagens danske ord: arbejdsgiverjul (Employer's Christmas)

In Denmark December 24,25,26 and (sometimes) 27 are holidays, and so are December 31 and January 1. In some years all those days fall on common weekdays, and then it is a "arbejdstagerjul" (workers' Christmas). In other years - like this miserable year 2011 - the "free" days fall mostly in the two weekends where we already would have time off, and then it's the employers' turn to rejoice and be happy. We call that an "arbejdsgiverjul" - employer's Christmas.

Nevertheless: merry Christmas

And afterthat it is employer-christmas, am I now back and ready to go in work again (hyperliteral translation)

Hurra.

When I went on Christmas holiday I brought (among other things) my latest collection of excerpts from Lifandi Visindi (the science magazine which I mentioned already before Christmas), and one of the articles herein told about the 10.000 hours rule. According to a certain D.Levitin, who interviewed a large number of top artists and sportsmen, none of these had reached the top in his/her field without having trained for at least 10.000 hours. Those who had trained less might become ordinary anonymous players or performers, and the less they had practiced the lower on the rank they would end up. For musicians this meant a career as music teacher (and no, I don't make this up - this condescending appraisal of that noble occupation is taken straight from the article!). Unfortunately it doesn't give a specific number of hours for somebody who just wants to become a decent amateur, but the text leaves no doubt that an insane amount of training hours are the basis for becoming a world class performer - which only leaves a minor role to play for genetics and luck. Other articles in the collection describe the way memory works, our loss of privacy and ways to measure personality differences in the brain.

As you may have noticed Christmas is a time where TV stations send tons of rotten sentimental garbage. However this time NRK2 (from Norway) spent most of the time on one long recording of the things you can see when you take Hurtigruten (the 'fast route') along the immensely long Norwegian coast line. In other words: most of the time we saw exactly the same landscapes a passenger would see from one of the ships which ply this route - which takes 5 or 6 days or so in all. I doubt you could convince an American TV station to send a program without music, without commentary and without some silly ego-tripper jumping around, but just showing Norwegian fiords, the wake, the bridge or houses along the route. Because most of the other programs were so thoroughly lousy we let NRK2 run much of the time as some kind of 'living painting', with no obligation to watch the sailing all the time.

I have finished my Spanish photo magazin and instead I have staretd to read a magazin about tourism in the bus-back-home-from-work. The free newspapers which sometimes take my time are on holiday so I got through halv a magazine today and reckon that I'll get through the rest tomorrow. I'll just mention one article: 25 short glimpses of how New Year is celebrated in 25 places all over the planet. This reminded me of New Year 2009-10 where I was sitting at my hotel room in front of me telly, where I expected to see the largest fireworks in London .. but the only thing I saw was the ugly face of a a babbling journalist. When he stopped talking the fireworks were also over.
