You will definitely hear Irish in Galway, and have good opportunities to buy materials in the language as well =)

This is my last day in Taiwan, and it is raining. I like the place apart from two things: the weather and the dismal quality of the local TV. I have seen a few nice documentaries (I think) from the countryside on Hakka TV, and once I caught a man explaining the European cave paintings - with half the screen full of Chinese signs which could indicate that it was a new channel of some kind that just temporarily had delved into science, culture and things like that.

After Taiwan I arrived in Franfurt a.M. yesterday morning, after a night partly spent on sudokus, partly on copying Chinese signs from my Kauderwelsch 'Hochchinesisch' (i.e,. Mandarin) to empty spaces in my Sudoku booklet. The one thing that irritates me about this Kauderwelsch book is that it often just gives a Pinyin version (with tones), not the signs. But there are signs enough to make a few hours pass.

I have also studied my little book in Russian with cakes and sweets from the Canary Islands. But sometimes I think the authors have lost contact with reality. For instances they have some bisquits with icing, and with the rest of icing you can make some cookies that are close to the thing we call 'marengs' in Danish, although with some flour added (maybe 'merengues' in English?). They expect me to come up with some 15 eggs for 'delicate biscuits', 12 whites and 3 yolks for something called 'biscuits from Moya' and 7 whites for the icing and the small cookies. I don't eat that many eggs in a whole year, and what am I supposed to do with 16 yolks without whites?

But even though the book is more phantasy than reality it is good for me - not only I learn a lot of useful words, but I also get sonme succes experiences when I can understand what is happening. I can actuallz sometimes understand words which aren't in the tiny Collins dictionary which I brought along because it is so obvious what kind of utensil or ingredient you might conceivably need.

I have returned to my hotel after a hard but fruitful day. Many museums here in Frankfurt have free admission the last Saturday in every month until May, which came as a pleasant surprise. So first I saw the excellent paleontological Senckenberg museum against payment, but then I saw the following spree of museums for free: The Archeological Museum (with an exhibition about Ancient Egypt), The World culture museum(somewhat disappointing because it was more art than anthropology), The large Arts and Crafts museum (with an exhibition about about China, which included a Chinese-signs - Pinyin dictionary sold in ...erh,, what was it, 400.000.000 copies? And a rickshaw coolie somewhere in China had learnt it by heart!), the Architecture Museum and finally a Communications Museum with an exhibition about the Do-it-Yourself movement (here I followed a free guided tour).

Afterwards I have bought four magazines at the Hauptbahnhof: Welt der Wunder, Wunderwelt Wissen, the French Science et Vie and the Russian Neue Zeiten. This last one is actually a monthly publication for Russians in Germany (apparently something like the Bенский журнал which I bought last time I visited Innsbruck). And even here the Chinese can't stop coming back at me: thee is an article called "Синдром китайского ресторана" with the undertitle "Что китайцу хорошо, то немцу ...вред" (i.e. "The Chinese restaurant syndrome: what's good for Chinese, (is) bad for Germans"). If they try to scare me then it is too late. I have been there and I have eaten there, and so far I have survived the Chinese food. I suppose I'll know tomorrow, where I'll read the magazine during the long train tour back home.

I will be busy with my photographs and other travel related activities this evening, but I'll just mention that the Russian article about the "Chinese restaurant syndrome" focused on Monosodium_glutamate. In spite of this catchy phrase it is not restricted to Chinese restaturants, but is found in lots of food products because it is a cheap and effective way of giving them a 'meaty' flavour. The article in Neue Zeiten stresses the dangers while the Wikipedia article claims that the reports about the risks are anecdotal and with little scientic support. Well who knows. But I have Chinese food as late as Friday in Frankfurt (with "Stäbchen") and I'm not dead yet.

During the 9 hour long train trip home (on 1. class to almost half normal price) I read in my new magazines most of the way, and it will take too long time to get through it all, but I'll mention one article (or rather series of articles) in the French "Science et Vie" because it may have some far reaching consequences.
