Dansk: Jeg har tilbragt nogle dage i selskab med min familie.
I have spent some days in company with my family.

Jeg medbragte tre bøger: en stor bog på dansk om Loire-slottene i Frankrig,
I with-brought three books: a big book on Danish about Loire-palaces-the in France,

Umberto Eco's "La Struttura Assente" og Pons' "Grammatik kurz und Bündig Polnisch".
Umberto Eco's "The Structure Absent" and Pons' "Grammatik short and concise Polish".

Det er naturligvis for meget forlangt at man kan koncentrere sig om studierne,
It is nature-wise too much demanded that man can concentrate oneself about studiesThe,

når man også skal spise, snakke, checke musefælder på loftet, spise, snakke og se fjernsyn,
when man also shall eat, talk, check mousetraps on atticThe, eat, talk, and and see television.

men heldigvis var der også lidt transporttid til og fra Sønderjylland.
but fortunately was there also (a) little transport-time to and from SouthernJutland.

FR:

What are the roots that clutch, what branches grow
Out of this stony rubbish? Son of man,
You cannot say, or guess, for you know only
A heap of broken images, where the sun beats,
And the dead tree gives no shelter, the cricket no relief,
And the dry stone no sound of water. (The Waste Land, Eliot)

Drapeau blanc, je me rends...

---

I have been working until almost 11 PM so there has been little time for language studies. But I have a couple of remarks about the analysis of verbs in Slavic grammars (of course provoked by my current reading of the concise Polish grammar by Pons, which actually is an excellent little thing - I'm already thinking about buying more volumes in the same series).

In all Slavic languages there are perfective and imperfective verbs. And it is generally stated that the former don't have a present form - they actually have something that has exactly the same form, but with a futuric meaning, and this is called the simple future or something like that. In my opinion this is pure rubbish: there is one form, but it takes on different meanings depending on the aspect of the verb. Perfective verbs typically refer to actions with a result, and this can't be covered by a single point in time like the present moment - the result will be something that points toward the future. Imperfective verbs don't have this problem. So this is just a semantic question, and it is quite unnecessary to speak about two distinct verbal forms.

There is something similar going on in the case of the subjunctive. The socalled subjunctive or conditional in Russian is the combination of a perfectly normal past tense form "я писал" (I wrote) and the word "бы", which in itself carries the modal meaning. In Polish the situation is more complicated: the corresponding word "by" has penetrated into the past tense form "(ja) pisałbym". However it also occurs in combination with other kinds of words and as an independent word, as in Russian, so you can actually claim that Polish has acquired a real subjunctive, but "by" has still kept much of its original independence.

Which reminds me of the Portuguese futures and conditionals with interpolated unstressed personal pronouns. But here nobody counts the pronoun as part of the verbal form .. it is just seen as a potential intruder.
