I have not written anything in this thread for several days, and the reason is that I have been extremely busy at my job (including the hours I have spent working from my domicile, which luckily is possible nowadays). So I have not had much time to study - an hour or so yesterday spent on my Bahasa guide from Singapore, the Polish grammar from Pons in the bus back home from the office and a few minutes here and there listening to different languages.

---

First I listened to stored clips about tourism from the Radio/TV of Andorra. The national language of this tiny country is of course Catalan, but in these programs there was also long sections in Spanish because countries like Chile and Peru were among the themes. And everybody in Andorra can probably understand Spanish too.

From there I went to Youtube where I listened to some clips with Peter Lund Madsen, who is most famous for making TV (partly in the company of his brother Anders). But actually he is a brain specialist, and the clips I listened to were about the brain - including a scathing review of the life and crimes of the quack who invented lobotomy (now I know that it would have been safer to have dr. Frankenstein as your doctor than Dr. Moniz, the man who performed brain operations with an awl).

From there to a series of Youtube clips in French of the upcoming generation of androids - the computers will inevitably overtake us in calculating prowess so the only way to avoid being pushed aside will according to some be to coalesce with the computers instead of fighting them (as the UNA bomber did - he is mentioned several times in these clips). Weird? Not really - the youngsters of today already seem to be totally inseparable from their mobile phones (handys), and it wouldn't require too much of a leap of imagination to see their electronic gadgets replaced with real implants.

Finally I listened to a series of clips in French about the development of the string theory, also known as the "theory of everything" because it seems a promising strategy for unifying gravitation with the other three elementary forces of nature: the strong, the weak and the electromagnetic force.

I finished one of the projects that have forced me to work on overtime at my job at around 20.30 Friday evening. And consequently I could finally dedicate a full day yesterday to my languages studies, apart from lunch and a short trip downtown. My study program was centered around Bahasa Indonesia from 8 to 10, on Russian from 10-12, on food and shopping from 12 to 14, and from 14 to 18 and from 22 to 24 I spent time on Polish (because I'm going to visit Poland for a couple of days next month, and I would like to be prepared). But these studies of Polish also were relevant for Russian and Greek because I used multilingual printouts for the purpose: the Polish original interspersed with Russian to the left (on 2/3 of the pagewidth), Danish to the right (the last 1/3) ... and selected passages translated into Greek below. I used a text from Wikipedia about the French Horn (or just 'Horn') - which Google for some reason more often than not translated to "угол" in the Russian version. Apart from that I was happy than my level in (passive) Russian now is at a level where I practically could forget about the Danish translation and just use the Russian version for reference - and even the Polish original seemed almost comprehensible even though this is the first time I in all seriousness have tried to read and understand a Polish text.

While I did my stint on Bahasa I I noticed that my wordlists for the preceding sections of the tourist booklets from Singapore weren't on top of any of my piles, so I introduced a new rule: the wordlists belonging to a certain project should be kept with the copy so that I can check the context of each word if I should feel like it.

During the evening I have also updated my collection of Word-files with content from this thread - which has become so big that the option for making an automatic 'printable' version doesn't work anymore (I don't really expect to lose my log, but you never know ... better be prepared for any eventuality!).

And of COURSE I also watched TV, most notably ...

Postea vitam Attilae exhibuerunt - ego novi eum Anglice sermone dicere!

Or in other words: a program from the History Channel about the Romans. The thing that makes me mention it here is that the interviews were shown in the original languages, just with Danish subtitles (provided by my cable operator): French, Italian, German and English. After that I watched a sympathetic biography of Attila the Hun (in English). Actually I didn't know that he spoke English...

And yesterday evening I mainly spent my time on Esperanto, reading through some articles from Wikipedia on the internet and studying one about the bassoon in detail - though without making a wordlist. Besides I listened to a bit of Portuguese radio while doing other things on my computer.

Ili parolas tre klare, kiu mi konvenas bone, kaj rimarkas sur amuzantaj ekzemploj, kiel pentristaj makakoj kaj homojn kiuj vivas kun porkoj pro tio ke iliaj psikiatroj pensas ke ĉi tiu estas bona ideo. Ĉi tiu estas frenezega mondo!

I have been urged to listen to a lot of Esperanto due to the upcoming congress, and this is a good idea because I normally primarily would be reading stuff. The problem is that it is hard to find interesting podcasts on the internet. However tonight I have been listening to something called Radio Verde from Canada, which isn't bad - they speak about things like painting monkeys and people who live with pigs because their psychiatrists think this is beneficial... the world is a strange place.

Besides I have spent some time on those Polish/Russian/Danish printouts, but it is slow going because I'm new to Polish. I do want to be able to read simple texts in this language by late April, but it would be optimistic to expect me to understand what people say in Polish, especially given that I haven't even tried so far.

Gute Nacht!

EN: I have an important question. In one of your videos I could see that you have the "Gyldendal Dansk - Hollandsk Ordbog". I'm planning to order this dictionary via a specialized bookshop in Germany. I informed on Gyldendal's website that the latest edition of this dictionary is from 2004 and that it costs kr. 399,00. But could you please have a look into your dictionary and tell me, whether the Danish part provides the nouns with the indefinite articles "en" and "et" to clarify the noun genders? If not, I want to buy this dictionary anyway because I'm unsatisfied with my "Langenscheidt Dänisch" bilingual dictionary.

you mean that the people have painted some pictures of the monkeys, or the monkeys have painted? People who live with pigs, you mean in the pigs' stable?? It's not good I think, although pigs are cute. Some years ago a farmer in my village had a family of pigs and the piglets were very cute I have some photos!!! But he didn't live with them, he live in his house and the pigs in the field with a type of hut which was their house for the night, also for protect the piglets when the fox is arrived, because maybe he would eat them :-(
Fasulye and Iversen, from tomorrow for about one week or two weeks (I'm not exactly sure) I can't visit the forum, therefore you don't think that I've left (why I've told) and hopefully I can log on after, bye until then, but probably I can visit today and during the evening.

I just listened to that particular podcast once, and I have forgotten whether those people actually had the pigs sleeping inside their bedroom - but it was definitely like having a dog. Except that pigs may be smarter.

And the painting monkeys are painting, not painted monkeys. Many zoos now have tried giving chimpanzees colours and brushes, and then the chimps make abstract paintings which even can be sold at auctions (which probably tells more about contemporary art and art buyers than it does about chimp skills). But I have seen videos and the chimps evidently enjoy putting paint on canvas. In some zoos they have also experimented with elephants and other animals, and at least (some) elephants seem to like the activity.

I'll check my Danish-Dutch dictionary when I get home.
