Right now I'm listening to a VHS tape with 4 hours of Catalan. I once had a 'Spanish language package' from my cable provider, but there weren't enough costumers, and then they scrapped the French, Italian and Spanish packages and made one 'Romance' package instead. Goodbye Catalan. But even though I didn't contemplate relearning this language back then I made this tape, and now I profit from this rare glimpse of foresight. After all I do want to be able to understand the language down there (and pronounce it in a somewhat congenial way) when I get down there later this week.

Achterna hett die Germanen den armen Armin schlachtet - so is's.

--------

We have discussed natural history museums before, but now I have found one more: in the Coll de Nargó area just south from Andorra there are a lot of bones in the soil, and therefore there also is a paleontological museum with a newly extended dino exhibition (including eggs, which have been found right here). However the majority of the finds seem to be later, not least from the Miocene. In principle it should be easy to get there from Girona, but I don't know whether the local public transport can be used to get there. I have checked the weather forecast: sun while I'm in Girona, rain in Barcelona. At least there are several excellent indoor attractions in Barcelona, including the splendid aquarium, the City Museum and also the Cathedral. I will also try the find some scientific magazines, but my guess is that most are in Castilian.

As I have mentioned a couple of times before NDR has relegated Low German at best to the radio, but more generally to oblivion. However I have found a few podcasts on its homepage, including 41 minutes about the Varrus-battle, "the only battle in world history to be named after the loser". In short, Arminius (Hermann) and his Germans annihilated Publius Quinctilius Varus and 1/8 of the entire Roman army in the Teutoburger Forest near Kalkriese (and afterwards some Germans annihilated Arminius). If this battle had been lost the Germans might have been speaking a Romance language today like the French.

He comprat dues grandes diccionaris de l´Academia Catalana, Anglés => Catalá i Catalá => Anglés, peró encara no he cercat revistes científiques.

========

My monolingual trip to Catalunya has so far been a success. I can understand what people say and the understand clearly what I say, which is more surprising, given that I haven´t spoken any Catalan at home.

I arrived yesterday at Girona, where I stay at a five star hotel where people are expected to bring their own laptops, and I didn´t see any intercafés there while I was walking around. That is why I haven´t updated my log for several days, shame on me. Right now I´m in Figueres, the town with the famous Dali Museum, and I have found a good internet place near the bus station - i.e. music free and with a keyboard where I so far have found all the relevant keys except ordinary parentheses.

Girona has a lovely medieval town with walls, labyrintical museums, pizza parlours and a cathedral where you are supposed to walk around with an audio guide. The lady as the desk looked quite consternated when I asked for the Catalan version, but as I patiently explained, you can speak English all over the world, Spanish in half the world, but Catalan only here. She had to agree, and I got my talkie Catalan thing.

The good thing about Girona and Figueres is that Catalan is so pervasive here that I don´t have to ask myself whether a certain person speaks it, and thus the risk that I get stuck with Spanish is almost non-existant. If somebody here doesn´t speaks or at least understands it then it is his or her problem, not mine. Some people have started out in English even before I have said a word, but so far they have switched quickly when I delivered my answer in Catalan. I have been asked several times where I have learned it, and each time I refer to my good ol´ teacher Berg at the university where I studied French in the 70s. It is at least partly true, and it would take too long time to give them the whole story about wordlists, selfstudy and internet TV.

I have bought two large dictionaries, from English to Catalan and the other way round. So far I haven´t been looking for scientific magazines, but that is my next task.

---------

Today I have visited Lloret de Mar, which a disgusting with sunburnt braindead turists rambling around, and it is the only place where someone has dared to continue speaking English to me after I have said "bon dia" and answered in Catalan, - but maybe those people where Anduclians who didn't know Catalan, they have got a lot mof those at the coast here, and they aren't all keen on learning Catalan. Tossa was much more pleasant, and they have a gem of an old walled town with turrets and all that. Finally San Feliu de Guixols is a quite ordinary pleasant town with few tourists, because it hasn't got much of a beach. Unfortunately the large historical museum had the obligatory siesta while I was there. And now I'm back in Girona for my last night here.
