So let's ask our great judge "Google", how relevant these four words are:

1. sentence knot (ENG): 10 700 000 hits

2. Satzknoten (GER): 562 hits

3. sætningsknude (DK): 1 840 hits

4. zinsknoop (NL): 29 hits

So now we can draw our conclusions out of these results. :)

> I would say that in none of the other three languages it's a common word, but it can be found in my Gyldendal dictionary dansk - hollandsk.

---

And no, I'm NOT going to translate this somewhat technical rant about a forgotten corner of French grammar into English!

"sentence knot" (ENG): 381 hits - and few of these represent the grammatical term "sentence knot"

Unless somebody can point to a more common English term my conclusion is that this construction - which is alive and well in English - has been overlooked by the grammarians, maybe because they didn't know what to do about it and believed that it would go away by itself if they just ignored it.

Iversen, merci pour les examples en français pour les "noeuds de phrase". Je les comprends très bien sans traduction anglaise (naturellement!).

BA I: Saya masih bekerja terlalu banyak, tapi sekarang aku menyimpan sedikit istirahat. Saya tidak punya waktu untuk membaca buku-buku besar, tetapi di antara ada waktu untuk mencetak dan artikel dari jurnal.Sebagai contoh, saya membuat bahkan mencetak artikel-artikel Wikipedia pada suku-suku Kalimantan, dan mereka lebih mudah untuk dibaca daripada panduan saya ke Singapura karena mereka tidak sebagai 'antusias'.

I still work too much - yesterday I wasted a whole evening on some recalcitrant data - and found out that the program that had produced my dataset had made a mess out of it. Then I changed the code and made a new dataset which seems to be better, but still not good enough. But to do myself a favour I have with short notice taken a couple of days off, and then those pesky data will have to wait.

So no big great books right now, but printouts and a number of articles magazines - and of course wordlists in different languages. Yesterday I managed to find time to read some old printouts from Wikipedia about tribes on Borneo (mostly those in Sarawak), and even though Wikipedia isn't the place to go for easy readers the languages here is easier than that in my guide booklets to Singapore. As I have mentioned before enthousiasm has a tendency to carry a comprehensive vocabulary and 'succulent' expressions with it. I got stuck with my summaries of past months, but I do intend to post September before mid October.

Since last entry I have spent a few days in England, more precisely in Norwich and Ely with day tours to Great Yarmouth, Cromer and Cambridge. So I didn't learn to speak a new language there, although I saw a poster in Cromer which listed some expressions from the lingo of the Norfolk region.

I brought an old Langenscheidt Greek-German dictionary along - in fact so old that it had all the accents and aspirations of the former orthography - so I could make wordlists galore. I accidentally brought along a few printouts in Esperanto which I already had read in July (where I last used that bag), but otherwise I was basically confined to English during my stay.

I did manage to watch Stephen Fry's Planet Word, and I was impressed (although I know from his quiz QI that he can move effortless from the most salacious subjects to the loftiest realms of snobby culture). The theme was swearwords, and apart from asking Ashanti women about the most revolting expressions in their language he basically stuck to English. But still it was one of the best language programs I have seen.

---

I spent some time at the 96. Universal Esperanto congress in Copenhagen in July, and the remarks above supplement my earlier comments from ultimo July.
