Well, the climate conference is big news, but for me it is mostly a lot of politicians that babble and babble and babble and babble.... I have read one thing that may serve as an antidote against too much hysteria around CO2 and things like that, nemlig some leaked reports about ecologists that in private e-mails frankly discussed how to lie about disturbing problems in their science and about methods to keep dissidents away from peer-reviewed scientific journals and academic positions. Whenever something becomes too popular fanatical types like those people turn up, and a good case becomes something like a religious creed where facts are suppressed if they don't fit the pattern. I fear that the conference will be a perspectiveless battle between such singleminded fanaticists and political bunglers that don't care a bit about the environment, and at the same time we will have hordes of confrontations-seeking criminal gangs roaming the streets of Copenhagen. Such conferences should be kept far away from places where people have to live - maybe someway on the Antarctic iceshelf (which is a very relevant theme for their discussions)

Apart from that I have had a lot of work to do for my travel club these days. We have our annual general assembly tomorrow, where I have been asked to be the chairman. Besides our magazine will be snt to the members in the begining of next, so we have sent e-mails to more than 500 members asking them to confirm their current address. Many of them also have told about first visits to new countries and things like that, which we register. An finally it has been my lot to scan and copy and registre 43 postcards from members who are travelling all around the world (which after all is the purpose of our club). So my time for language studies has been severely limited, - after all you can't spend your time twice (at least not outside Harry Potter). I have been reading my my book about conducting by Richard Wagner, but that's about all I have had time for.

Lingua sua non numeros habet, at modo verba relationiis: istud magis is quod istud. Quare numerant pauce, magis, multe. Termina coloris nesciunt.

-------

Ephemeris also mentions the tribe Piraha with the strange language that doesn't have numbers, color names, grammatical tempus nor the possibility to speak of things that haven't been seen by either me, you or somebody you know. Ephemeris also writes that they rarely sleep a whole night, but instead take short naps all through the day - I didn't know that.

Of iets natuurwenschappelijks...

Reference to the indian tribe and the Amazon triggered a longer stare at your post. I was on the edge of remembering some weird factoid about Amazon cultures, and then I came across this video on Youtube of the Piraha language.

---------

The reference to the "drie als Zwarte Pieten verkleede vrouwen" in Fasulye's message above made me remember en episode from Germany, where I was waiting for a train at a railway station in December. And then came The Holy Niclas and Knecht Ruprecht. That's a purely German tradition - Nicolas is of course the (presumed) historical figure behind Father Christmas, but in other countries he doesn't have a named helper.

I have been to Copenhagen for the annual convention of my travel clubs, so I have had 2x3 hours of trains travel where I could study languages. This included an issue of the French magazine Ushuaia, named after the Southernmost town in the world (which incidentally has been chosen as the venue for a regular meeting in my travel club - we succeeded in getting twenty members to come to a similar meeting in Tirana a few months ago). In the magazine there was among other things a criticism of the production of biofuels, - clearly not everything with "bio-" in its name is ecological and Green, and in this case the plants needed for the fuel will either be edible plants OR they will substitute potential food plants ORthe production will entail the destruction of hitherto unused land, as it happens for instance on Borneo. I also read some Russian grammar, a book about French idioms, further magazines including on in Serbo/croat, which I bought at the main railwaystation in Copenhagen before going home. Even though my Russian isn't good, it alrady now seems to be sufficiently good as a base for understanding simple texts in other Slavic languages.
