To think I never picked up on the origin of this guy Gaspard. I hope you have succumbed to Vladimir Ashkenazy's recording of Ravel's piano composition of the same name. It was the first CD I ever listened to, back when CD players were expensive. Ravel's Gaspard de la Nuit is a complex sculpture for the ears.

Yes, I know Ravel's three pieces almost by heart - although even when I still played the piano they were far too difficult for me. The three pieces are Scarbo, Ondine and Le Gibet, and Wikipedia says about Scarbo that "The piece is famous for its incredible difficulty, partly because Ravel intended the Scarbo movement to be more difficult than Balakirev's Islamey. Because of its technical challenges and profound musical structure, it is considered one of the most difficult solo piano pieces in the standard repertoire."

All three poems can be found at the homepage I referred to, together with other great poetic works in French. One of my own lesser-known favorites on the list is "Les Chimères" by Gerard Nerval (although I haven't read the whole thing since the 70s). I still remember much of at least one of the poems in that collection almost by heart because I once published a detailed structuralistic analysis of it (and painted a painting of it):

La hejmopaĝo Behind The Name diras tion:

"Derived from the Germanic element frod "wise". This was the name of the hobbit hero in 'The Lord of the Rings' (1954) by J. R. R. Tolkien, who used Old English to translate some hobbit names (Frodo's real name was Maura)."

".. dos tollo is .. (Das Tolle ist ..)
".. wee haben see voor trei Johren ." (.. wir haben sie vor drei Jahren ..)
"oft mol" (oft mal)

--

I visited the Medieval Festival of Horsens Friday. Actually the much more publicized Festival of my own town Århus started at the same time, but Horsens has got all the life in the streets and character and joyfullness which the festival in Århus once had - but since then it has degenerated into a boring series of expensive concerts and some places where you can get drunk. Unfortunately I had promised to visit my family Saturday and Sunday so I only got a couple of hours in Horsens. One general thing about these Medieval Festivals is that they are very international - for instance I discussed the making of an instrument named "Humle" with a German instrument maker. I also listened to an interesting lecture about Dante Alighieri, but in Danish - not Italien.

Speaking about Italy: Saturday I watched a TV program called "Bilder aus Südtirol" (pictures from South Tyrol) in German. The point is that this area was ceded from Austria to Italy after the first World War, and now it is bilingual - with Italian dominating in Trento (which I visited last year - the town with the big time noisepolluted railway station) and some kind of equilibrium in Bolzano (which I also visited - same ugly screens with ugly commercials, but less noise).. and in the country side there are some areas which still are dominated by German. But which kind of German? I heard everything from almost pure High German to hardcore dialect which even I had trouble understanding.

During the train travel back and forth I read the second part of Tolkien's Lord of the Rings (i.e. the part from Elronds place to Lothlorien, including the fateful tour through Moria where Gandalf fought the balrog and fell into a deep hole). There are in most editions three volumes, but the tale is actually divided into six parts by Tolkien himself. Lothlorien is a nice place where I can leave Frodo and his companians for a time - after around 700 pages of Esperanto since the big Congress there are other languages which need my attention more, and I have had enough fairy tales for a while now.
