To Марк: Well, a passive construction isn't what I had in mind, but let's not delve further into that. Maybe an infinite phrase based on a participle isn't possible in the concrete context.

Pipi estis tre rimarkinda infano.

I haven't had time to read thick books of any kind lately (not since volume II of the Lord of the Rings and Os Lusíadas), but in my briefcase I found an ageold printout from Lernu.net of the beginning of Astrid Lindgren's Pippi Longstockings in a bilingual setup à la Ilya Frank, but with one addition: first alternating sentences in ESperanto and Swedish, and then the text in pure Esperanto. Luckily I can read both versions now.

Apart from that I have mainly worked with Russian, Polish, Bahasa I and Greek the last couple of evenings. And right now I'm listening to a program about Spaniards all over the world at TVE. This very moment they show flamenco dancing Spaniards and their Japanese spouses in Japan, and before that we visited their compatriots in Brazil.

ESP: Tio estas ege interesa eksemplo, cxar mi ege sxatis legi la Germanan version de cxi-tiu libro, kiam mi mem estis infano. En Esperanto la rakonto sonas bone! Cxu "Vilao Vilaltao" estas la fama "Villa Kunterbunt"? Sxajnas, ke jes. Koran dankon pro tiu-cxi citato!

En la Sveda (kaj Danesa) lingvoj "Villa Kunterbunt" estas "Villa Villekulla", kaj Pippi sin nomas "Pippilotta Viktualia Rullegardinia Krusemynta Efraimsdotter Långstrump". Astrid Lindgren havis grandan imagkapablon!

I have several times referred to my Russian history book, which I copy and study one short fragment after the other. Yesterday I was puzzled by a reference to a merchant named Afanasia Nikitin from Tver who travelled all the way down to India, where he stayed for four years. This happened in 1475, a few years before Russia finally could cut the ties to the Mongol-Tartar empire, and it was in every sense of the word an interesting time. He sailed down Volga with other merchants and an ambassador, and the passage through the Russian towns went smothly, but the travellers were plundered in the Tatar town Buzan. In spite of this he got through the Hormuz Strait and onwards to India, where the rampant nudity of the locals clearly was a shock for him. So far I have just skimmed this part of the tale, but he writes about elephants and holy cows and Nandi Bulls - which awakened my own travel memories from a less adventurous epoch. When Nikitin left India after four years he apparently passed through Ethiopia (!), Muscat and Istanbul, where he saw his third ocean, the Black sea - the whole tale (which actually is a letter to the folks at home) is called "Travel to three seas". The last placename in the letter is "Khafa" - I don't know where that is, but he apparently died during the last leg of the travel.
