Your laptop probably is set to show more pixels across the screen than my old PC screen. Things look fine for me too now. Thanks.

----------

I have found out that the Dutch version of Wikipedia has several very informative articles about the geological epochs of the Earth - presumably there is an enthousiastic and knowledgeable Dutchman somewhere who has made it his hobby to write these articles (and then his collegues can descend on them like vultures to find holes and errors, - that's how Wikipedia works). Yesterday I studied the transition from the Paleocene to the Eocene, where the temperature of the Earth over less than 20.000 years jumped 7 degrees C. Today I have read about the Eocene, which started warm - with forests on the Antartic continent - but as Antartica glided further Southwards there was suddenly room for a sea current around the whole Earth, and then the temperature down there dropped considerably so that an icecap formed, and this cooling spread to the rest of the Earth. The Eocene is the epoch where not only our modern grasses developed, but also first the prosimians ('half monkeys'), later also the true monkeys (btw. I just noticed that the tarsiers* aren't prosimians, but an isolated group within the true monkeys according to the English Wikipedia, - am I really supposed to believe that?? In fact the same article contains this passage "unlike other prosimians.." - so now I'm totally confused!)

* the little guys with the enormous bulging eyes which I saw in the Philippines in January.

The French text is something about the methods to remember idiomatic expressions, but I may write something in English about that problem in my profile thread, where I try to concentrate my theoretical work - this log is for fun and for language training. So let me just mention that my current bus-back-home-from-work reading is a French dictionary of idiomatic expressions in the series Livre de Poche. Quite entertaining, but not easy to remember.

IT: Parlando di You Tube: Il giovane poliglotta Amir ha fatto un video molto impressionante con il titolo "Amir speaks in 7 languages", dove parla inglese, francese, tedesco, Italiano, russo, spagnolo e portugese.

I did listen to Amir, but I ended up listening to Steve Kaufmann (alias Zhuangzi) instead, - 3 talks of 10 minutes each. The difference is that he made me think and not just listen. I totally agree with him on the role of teaching, less so on the usefulness of explicit grammar and prelearning of words and things like that (he doesn't really like those things), but he kept me captivated for half an hour, and that's not a small accomplishment. It is much more difficult to keep a relevant line in what you are saying if you primarily speak to show that you know X languages.

EN: I didn't know these videos of Steve Kaufmann. They are quite new anyway. They are interesting to listen to and they are well recorded. I personally like to deal with grammar and especially explain grammar rules to others (for example my pupils), so I don't agree with him on his statement, that grammar is irrelevant. I also like language courses, if the teacher is capable. I still remember my fascinating Danish course, our teacher was excellent! Steve Kaufmann is against language courses in general. I fully agree with you on the point that people should say something relevant than speaking "bla bla bla" in different languages on You Tube. Therefore I make a detailed concept for my own videos.
