When I have been away I don't get much study done for a few days - I have to select and edit my photos, write my travelogue, see what my mail box has in store for me etc. So I'll just mention a few things from my trip and then study hard for the rest of the evening.
SP: He escrito en español y catalán sobre mi viaje, pero en realidad también llevó transcripciones bilingües allí y efectivamente he estudiado algunos de ellos. Por ejemplo, tuve algunos textos de Wikipedia en bahasa Indonesia, incluyendo uno sobre los períodos en los Terciario: Paleoceno, Eoceno, Oligoceno, Mioceno y Plioceno. En mi próximo viaje en que no es seguro que tendré que discutir geologá o paleontología, pero me gustan estos temas. Por otra parte, he leído un texto en esperanto sobre el astrónomo alemán-británico Herschel, quien junto con su hermana exploraba el cielo nocturno con un telescopio de fabricación casera ... y allí encontró un planeta que baptizó George. Nosotros lo llamamos Urano. Of course my trip to Spain was dominated by two languages: Castilian and Catalan. But I did bring some bilingual texts, including most of the things the Indonesian Wikipedia has to say about the subdivisions of the Tertiary. OK, maybe chances are slim that I get to discuss paleontology and geology with the Indonesians next time I visit that country, but I like to read about those subject. I also brought a text in Esperanto about the German-British astronomer Herschel, who together with his sister Caroline found a new planet, which he proceeded to baptizise 'george', The rest of us call it 'Uranus'. DU: Ik dacht gisteravond dat het tijd was dat ik mijn Nederlands een beetje opgefrist, dus ik heb gelezen sommige websites uit Nederlandse musea. Er is een goed overzicht pagina hier, en het eerste museum dat ik bezocht was het museum Willet Holthuysen. Ik ben er niet geweest gedurende ten minste twintig jaar, maar het is een museum in het centrum van Amsterdam, ingericht in het huis van een rijke familie. De website biedt een virtueel bezoek, dwz. men kan vier van de ruimtes zien door een interactieve 360-graden camera. Dit betekent niet dat je moet schlechts het museum bezoeken door het internet, maar het is een goed aperitiefje, en als je daar bent geweest, is het ook een goede manier om jouw herinnering optefrissen. Ik heb ook een video gezien, en op deze pagina is er een link naar een website voor een project waar u kunt zelfs virtueel dwalen door geselecteerde musea, met inbegrip van het Willet-Holthuizen. Geweldig!
Yesterday evening I decided to do something about my Dutch, so I did some surfing and found an excellent list of Dutch museums (museum.startpagina.nl). I chose more or less by accident Willet-Holthuysen in Amsterdam, a museum which occupies a former family home with a garden. I haven't been there for maybe twenty years, but at the site there is a 'virtual tour' consisting of four intercative 360º cameras. Today, when I wanted to comment on this site I also found a video where a man tells in Dutch about his part of a project "Museumtours" - which I luckily can listen to while working. But lo and behold, then I also found a link to the Willet-Holthuisen part of this project, and it turns out to be something even better, namely a virtual interactive walk through the museum. I'm sure people won't stop visiting the museums becaue of this, - on the contrary. Such a virtual visit is a good appetizer and an even better reminder of your physical visit. I'm fairly sure that such virtual devices will be a standard part of homepages for museums and other sights, and I could even imagine that those that can't deliver will be the ones that lose visitors and funding. GR: Oταν ανέλαβα την Πεντηκοστή διακοπών με την οικογένειά μου, έφερε ένα άρθρο στην δημοτική σχετικά τις ελληνικές διαλέκτους του παρελθόν και του παρόν, και ένα άλλο άρθρο σχετικά την ινδο-ευρωπαϊκή γλωσσική και η Ινδία (σανσκριτικά!). Ήταν εποικοδομητική η ανάγνωση αυτών των άρθρων, αλλά ανακάλυψα ότι ήταν μεταφραστεί από μια μηχανή - ίσως από τα αγγλικά, διότι υπήρχε απομονωμένος ακόμα αγγλικές λέξεις μέσα στο κείμενο. Τότε θα μπορούσαν να χρησιμοποιήσουν δεν τους δυστυχώς για εντατική μελέτη της ελληνικής, αλλά μόνο για τη συλλογή του λεξιλογίου και γενικών γνώσεων.
SP: También estoy en un momento a subir un video sobre mi viaje recente a España a Youtube. Tal vez hablo demasiado rápido en ella, y por desgracia hay algunos errores estúpidos, pero no tengo tiempo para rehacerlo. During Pentecost I visited my family in Southern Jutland, bringing articles in Greek about Greek dialects and about Indo-European and India. I evidently learned something from them about their subjects, but it turned out that I couldn't use them for intensive study of Greek because they were machine translated, probably from English. I have spent the evening reading, studying and making wordlists in Polish, Russian and Bahasa (plus half a page of Afrikaans from a text collection which I found on my notestand below some other bilingual oddities) - but for once the most noteworthy thing tonight was a program on Raiuno: "Rumeni e Romani" (or something like that), a program with music and guests from Romania. And a memorable location: Piazza Campidoglio in Roma ('Rome').
IT: "Il flauto di Pan (o siringa) è uno strumento musicale aerofono, costituito da più canne, il cui numero può variare, di lunghezza diversa e legate" (Wikipedia). Tra gli ospiti famosi provenienti dalla Romania era anche il solo panflaurista di fama mondiale, Gheorghe Zamfir - e la presentatore femminile lo presentò in Italiano ed in rumeno impeccabile e menzionò anche che lo strumento si chiama "nai" in Rumeno. Inoltre abbiamo visto un gruppo folcorico, una raccolta di musicisti dall'Orchestra Filarmonica di Bucureşti, una signora rumena che ha cantato una aria di Puccini e vari ospiti non musicali, tra i cui i sindaci di Roma e d i Bucureşti. Normalmente a questa ora Raiuno presenta un programma noiosissimo politico chiamato Porta a Porta (prego: chiude la porta!), ed era una pura coincidenza che ho scoperto l'eccezione positiva.
