I have spent some time yesterday evening reading some of the texts which I collected just before Christmas, and one of these was a minimally promisiting tekst about the DNA of a 400000 years old femur from Atapuerca in Spain, which supposedly belonged to a neanderthal - after all, Spain was a stronghold of these people and probably also the last place where you could find them. But then the bone turned out to belong to a Denisovan ... In this very thread I have already written about the discovery of a third type of human based on the DNA of a few bones found in a cave in Denisova in Siberia. It has been known for some time that Melanesians have a larger percentage of DNA in their nucleid DNA than any other humans living, but even they are true Homo Sapientes, which you can demonstrate by studying their mitochondrial DNA. DNA in these 'energy intruders' in our cells is inherited directly from a mother to her children so it can be used to trace lineages in a way ordinary DNA from the nuceli can't. But the person from the Atapuerca cave was apparently a true descendant of the Denisovans - which leaves the queation: the that person (or his/her family) walk from Siberia to Spain to mingle with the Neanderthal, or did the Neanderthals invade a vast territory populated by Denisovans? One additional piece of the puzzle is that the bone in question is 40.000 years old - that is, much older than the bones found in the Denisovan cave.

I have so far bought three science magazines in Dutch, and I intend to buy several more before leaving. One of these is called "Eos" and it is from the Scientific American familiy. Another is called "Historie", but I have not read that one yet. The third is called "Weer", and it looked as first as a quite trustworthy publication - and I still coonsider many of its articles as both interesting and trustworthy. But then I stumbled over passages where the age of the univers was limited to a few thousand years, and where it is assumed as a simple fact that the univers is created by someone instead of some spontane process based on chance. And then you suddenly see some weird argumentations - like the idea that the Milky way should be stock full of supernova remnants if it was as old as claimed. But the simple truth is that remnants like the Crab nebula are dispersed extremely fast on a cosmological timescale, and their material eventually ends up in later evolved stars, planets and humans - including the author of the article I'm referring to.

Another case: the problems surrounding the chirality of organic materials involved in biological processes are not just a problem for"the scholars who "who think that life isn't constructed, but spontanely originated" ("die denken dat het leven niet is ontworpen, maar spontaan is ontstaan"). Even if you think someone put the chirality bias in those processes by design you still have to give a reason why (and how) - and explain where that creative entity came from. Actually the article quotes some fairly reasonable explanations, namely that once a process has arosen with a left or right bias it can't use compounds with the other 'directionality, and it won't produce such compounds. So the real question is: why don't we have parallel life forms based on either right-turning or left-turning molecules (and the twain shall never meet!)? And the simple explanation could be that the products of the one kind would be poison for the other, so one of the two chiralities would kill the other. It is of course hard to show that this actually happened more than 3.5 billion years ago (which is the approximate age of the oldest rocks on the Earth that show signs of organic processes). But it is even harder to show where the creator of chirality came from.

Another publication with a blind spot is Lonely Planet, which in all its political correctness has a tendency to overlook anything ressembling a zoo or aquarium. OK the book about the Netherlands mentions an institution dealing with (and showing) seals on the island Texel, but probably only because those adorable little baby seals with their big moist eyes are irresistable even for the old hippies and travellers who write these guide books. Artis Royal Zoo in Amsterdam is mentioned, but described as "an alphabet soup of animals (...) but the lush grounds are the true delight. (...) If you prefer your nature stuffed, stop by the zoo's museum ". The worldclass zoo Blijdorp in Rotterdam is not even mentioned let alone shown on a map, and the town Emmen doesn't even have its own section, but is just mentioned somewhere as a place devoid of sights. But actually it has a fine zoo with an entrance building that also contains a whole paleontological museum and aquarium. However it's a zoo and as such invisible to the LP team.

I have been speaking almost entirely Dutch all my time here, but a few times I have had to use a word or two from other languages. For instance I could suddenly not remember the word for breakfast ("ontbijt") when I checked in in Delft, and I also let a sweet lady in Rhenen decide that we should speak German - probably because my Dutch contains a sprinkling of Dutchified German words. But in most cases people accept that we stick to Dutch once I have shown that I do mean it seriously. Btw I visited Rhenen because of its zoo (which of course isn't mentioned in the guidebook), but I must say that I found this zoo almost unbearable because of loud and ugly music somewhere in the African section. And I had to rush through the disgusting aquarium in the nondescript beach horror Scheveningen because of the sickening music that spoiled most areas - so there are limits even to my patience with zoos and aquaria.

- Wetenschap in Beeld

In

I leave the Netherlands tomorrow morning, so I can stock up on Dutch (and Flemish) magazines (as spelled by Tarvos) in Schiphol. I looked at some of them in a shop today, but for instance Kijk had the mafia on the front page, and that's not what I want to read right now. I have been looking for a special issue of MIND (another relative of Scientific American as far I could see, and in English) which I saw at the railway station in Groningen, but it was raining outside so I didn't buy it. The content theme was creativity, and contrary to the mafia I find this theme quite attractive. There are some Dutch psychology magazines which might be relevant, but I can't carry the whole of Mr Bruna's stock back home with me - and it would also be quite expensive.

EN: And now i AM back home again, and I have carried 2 kg of magazines and comics in Dutch back home with me.

SCO: Comics?? Well, juist ane anely comic: "Asterix bij de Picten" (€ 6.49). Aye ah knaw, ah shoud had written this in Pictish, but ye see, naebody ken a thing aboot the leid o the Picts! Naebody even ken whither the blae peeple spake an Indoeuropean tongue or some ither thing frae lang forgitten days ere the cummin o the Celts. Bede an Admonan wrote wee remerks that kythed that the Pictish tongue wisnae the same as Auncient Goedelic as spaken by the Scots (nor Auncient Brythonic as spaken forder tae the sooth), but hou much unalike ware they? A wheen o scholarts ween that the Picts haed a seestem o writin, but onywey they didna leave lang screeds as you wid need tae decode an unco writin seestem. Housomeiver, the Pictish Chronicle - whilk is said tae have been made unner king Kenneth II o Scotland ( 971 until 995) - conteens a Pictish king list. The first king ower baith Picts and (Celtic) Scots wis actuaelly a Pict, Coinneach mac Ailpein (in the Goedelic leid) or Kenneth I MacAlpin (as transported intae Laeland Scots or into the Sassenach language). Mebbe his reel name in Pictish wis Albin, or wis Albinus juist his name in Latin? Ah dunno, and naebody knows. Anywey, the Picts merged wit the Scots afore the year 1000 and lost thair auld leid ere onybody cared tae write onything paerteecular aboot it. Mebbe Asterix shall solve the mysteerie wit the help o his druid. Ah shall know in a wee..
