^^ What I don't understand is why it sounds so bad.

Plus it is too European to be neutral. People who already speak a European language are at an unfair advantage.

It's interesting to read other's reasons for not learning language X. Whereas many people seem to want a language that they can use to communicate with other people, this is my least important factor. For me, languages whose primary selling point is so that I can talk to people are at the bottom of the list.

I've come to realize I must have early onset curmudgeon's disease (aka. EOCD). I barely want to talk to people I love and care about, let alone spend years of my life to prepare for a conversation with a stranger. :)

Hehe, that's a very very good point and probably the reason why the number of speakers a language has makes very little to no difference to me too when I choose a language to study.
