I'm listening to the JLPT prep audio lessons on Japanese pod. They have one for 4 and 3. I listened to the JLPT 4 one and I already knew most of everything they said. That was just the 1st show though. I think they'll cover some grammar that'll be new for me later (I am pretty sure there's a couple things on the test I haven't formally done yet like the passive voice). And I found out that apparently you only need a 60% to pass. Such a low passing percent almost makes me want to try for the JLPT 3 instead. But it would be so stressful. If I'm doing practice material and getting half of it right and I'm clueless the other half of the time that would be very very stressful indeed.

Switching up the way I study vocab (again). I am back to spaced repetition. The app I use doesn't synch well (although it has a backup option that might do the trick if I set things up). Anyway. I was using my iPad mostly for studying because I really like the device a lot. It's pretty portable but not pocket size or 1 hand sized. So I switched my decks to the ipod touch. I've also changed the SRS so the minimum interval is 3 hours. The decks I plugged into it are actually review but I haven't reviewed some in a while so it's not too hard to get through them. Well for cards that aren't sticking so well (either because they're new to me or they just stink) the interval is refreshing so I'm doing the same cards throughout the day. I've got the ipod touch on me all the time so I pretty much just take it out whenever I have a moment and start studying. I currently have two decks I'm actively trying to keep up with... Side 1 Kana/Japanese audio has most priority and the next is Side 1 English which I'm doing after the other decks reviews are done. I'm on top of both at the moment, none due. A lot of cards pop up throughout the day though.
I've been doing this a few days. Ideally I won't fall too far behind. In case I do fall behind the app has an option to give me credit for getting a card right based on actual interval - IE if I don't touch the deck for a few days it will see that I got it right with 4 days in between instead of the due interval of 1 day and credit me for that. So that's there in case I get lazy or busy. I'm pretty positive about this. I had a problem I think where getting new cards into my head was sometimes a pain because I wasn't studying them again soon enough. Of course I have a paid membership to iKnow also right now heh. I really like their site but I think this SRS method could be better. I don't think they really do an SRS method on their app/site. I dunno. 1 person has voted this message useful | ||||||

I thought iKnow spaced reviews on a kind of SRS principle too. But whatever works for you is a good thing!
I had a similar dilemma on deciding which JLPT level to go for, although I was stuck between 3 and 2. I'm glad I went for the lower level. The exam was stressful even though I could understand most of it, simply because it had been so long since I'd taken an exam. I still learned absolutely loads in the preparation for it and it's given me a much better foundation for N2 (which I still expect to fail first time!) I am signed up. I think the deadline came and went. I was getting emails from a couple websites reminding
me for some reason. I still have to buy plane tickets and stuff (wish the test were more local). Had a rare opportunity to practice Japanse at work today. Of course I went the easy route and had someone translate for me but I could understand a lot of what they were saying. The SRS on the iPod with low minimum intervals is going pretty well. It being pocket/hand size etc., I'm using it all the time. I'm getting sick of seeing some of these vocabulary words so often lol. But it's getting drilled into my head. It's not unusual for me to start the day with 150 cards due, get through them by the time I start my shift at work - have another 70 or so due by lunch, and then do 200 or by the time I go to bed. (it's spaced out gradually for the most part as I am constantly pulling the iPod out of my pocket to study). I will say homonyms and synonyms are annoying since I confuse them when they come up. I want to get the card right so if I think of the wrong word I usually give a wrong response. Occasionally I'm putting NOT this word on the card to try to prevent that. One set of vocabulary words like this that's particularly annoying are 役に立つ、手伝い、手伝う、役立てる... I'm not sure I think there's more maybe that get mixed in with that... 応援 and 世話... which sound way different which helps but still.. anyway. This is still the 1st week so I think I'll somehow manage to get them all in my head pretty soon despite this.
I'm finally making a counter deck. I am sick to death of not being able to confidently say X amount of such and such. And the days of the month too. I more or less know the days of the month but can't always recall them. And I'm gonna make a little deck to get me doing the obligation/prohibition more quickly... Annoying little construct that's quite different than the way we do it in English (everything in Japanese has to be the opposite...). This being the てはいきない、てはだめだ and なくてはいきない、なくてはだめだ。。。な ければいきない。 (that was off the cuff if I got it wrong I'm still learning). 1 person has voted this message useful | ||||||

So which level did you decide to go for in the end? I'm starting to brick it over N2. I'm doing a very good job of procrastinating it at the moment!
I find the best way of dealing with synonyms is to just try and link them to a word in the target language I already know. If I'm attaching a new word to a word I'm already very familiar with, it seems to work quite well. Trying to learn a bunch of synonyms at the same time would be a disaster for me. It might be worth just deciding that you'll learn one of the words for now, and then reintroduce its synonym later on. Once you start reading more I don't think you'll have too much trouble with phrases like 役に立つ, I seem to see it everywhere. Oh and I think the phrases of obligation are probably one of the first introductions you get to the craziness of double negatives in Japanese. I just practiced learning things like しなければならない/しなければなりません as set phrases with lots of things like shadowing and repetition until they just fell off the tongue. 1 person has voted this message useful |
