So true, but if you can hold out long enough to start seeing results, then both diets and language-learning become easier. I feel the same way about the junk food. I really wish I could munch on something while reading Harry Potter, but I try to limit myself. I always get fat when I'm depressed, so now I'm trying to get to my proper weight. I easily got down to my pre-depression weight, but I really want to be a little lower than that. I ought to be about five kilos less than I am. Watching an anime and listening to a Japanese couple argue.. and one guy says this will be a new "starto" for us. (well the rest is Japanese). It sounds funny with an "o" attached to the end. Considering the seriousness of their conversation it just sounded ridiculous to me. Anyway.
Watching Mawaru Penguin Drum. Really really good anime series. I think I've watched everything good on Crunchyroll (except for the new series which you have to wait for new episodes for) so I'm looking outside that site (finally). 1 person has voted this message useful | |||

I added a lot of new vocab from just browsing the Internet to my deck. Using Rikaisama of course. I think the
real voices makes the words a little easier to remember. I'm back to testing so I see the kana on side 1 then I remember the meaning. Really I'm testing for meaning. But then I try to remember the kanji too. I'll make the card repeat until I get the kanji and the meaning but I won't give a wrong response unless I don't know the meaning. The kanji is just something extra. I'd stopped studying kanji for a while so its kind of refreshing. At the same time it's taking way longer than before to get through the due cards. I haven't been doing much with my sentence decks. It takes a lot more discipline for me to study those unfortunately. It gets back to grammar I think and how I find it a pain to sit down and study grammar. I finished 12 episodes of high school of the dead anime. It was really good and that surprised me. I liked the military nerd character the most. Anime seems to a great job of portraying nerds accurately I think. Probably because the authors are pretty nerdy themselves. After having lots of good experiences with anime torrents I'm finally getting some bad luck. One series I wanted to watch has subs in some strange language whose script I don't recognize. The one I'm watching now seems to have been encoded badly somehow and there's random colors appearing on the screen for no reason but it's watchable. 1 person has voted this message useful | |||

Hey, I've read some bits and pieces of your log and I have just have to say bravo! I hope you continue with your Japanese studies. It's crazy that you've already kept this log alive for more than a year. ^_^ *thumbs up*

Well I'm changing the way that I study again. We'll see how this works out. I'm using sentences basically.
So on side 1 I see a sentence and then I read it etc and if I can say all the kanji and know the word then I beit right. On side 2 I have an English translation of the sentence and below that definitions of any words I'm not 100% on. The words are taken from rikai so they have the kanji, kana, and the English. I also have text to speech for the sentence. Unfortunately this means not using rikai-sama's awesome native speaker audio. Can't be helped I guess. Its based off what I read on AJAT. His example includes the vocabulary in Japanese (I think). With that huge wall of kanji in his example it was hard to tell what the heck was going on. Assuming it was kanji I think he could have done a better job exposing the system. Most beginner and intermediates would get confused I think... or just me. He really encourages using mono japanese dictionaries for your flash cards and well everything. I don't like that method. I tried it some with spanishand German but didn't stick with it since it seemed to slow me down. It was exhilerating that I could do it but that didn't mean I should. I liked would use it occasionally for fun but most vocabulary got an English definition. I don't think the definition is that important anyway so much as studying the examples of how it's used. I'm hoping to add 10 to 15 new sentences per day this week and see how it goes. Each sentence will haveaat least one new word of course and likely more. Ajat claimed it's possible to add 50 per day. I spent several hours on my new vocabulary and only did 35. Granted it may go faster later. 50 would be nice heh. I'm liking my new nexus 7 android 7 inch tablet. Its pretty fast and the resolution is pretty good too. A step down from my iPad 3 resolution but that's on. I love how it FITS in my hands. And I can type on it whole holding it too. This is really cool. They've apparently decided to nix flash for android starting with the latest android release. This is a let down. There's tons of sites that use it including japanese pic dot com. I've tried to work around it and have gotten some flash going but it doesn't work on more newer advanced content. I can't do livemocha.com for example. The nexus is far better for many games out there too since I can comfortably reach the entire screen which was not the case with the ipad. The biggest let down for me though is thatni can't used my srs flashcard apply since its ios only. If I used anki then it'd be no problem but I don't. Anyway, if you're looking for a good android tablet this one is good and cheap. I haven't tested it but I think they've fixed the bug where some kanji gets shown as Chinese instead. 1 person has voted this message useful | |||

Here's an example flash card.
side 1: 日本で車を運転するときには左側通行を忘れ ずに。 side 2: "When you drive in Japan, remember to keep to the left. 左側通行 ひだりがわつうこう (n) Keep Left 忘れる わすれる (v1,vt) to forget; to leave carelessly; to be forgetful of; to forget about; to forget (an article); (P) ずに ずに (conj,aux) without doing" ----- In this example I haven't actually studied the suffix ずに. Although I know 忘れる more or less I might forget the pronunciation of the kanji or second guess myself so I'm putting on there just in case to make it easier to check myself. ---- Another reason I might second guess myself is the translation is a little weird. The meaning of the sentence as a whole is the same but why didn't they translate it as without forgetting?? I'm getting my sentences from tangorin which gets it from Tatoeba. I may try some dual language stories and get example sentences from there instead later. Let me know how it goes with using sentences in your flashcards. I regularly swap between sentences and single words or chunks. I find that the latter is a lot faster, plus I can practice both recognition and production. But the former helps grammar stick, including stuff like ずに. 1 person has voted this message useful |
