I feel the same way about reading. It's frustrating if you can understand what is going on but still can't properly "read". However, for me at least, reading out loud doesn't help as I tend to focus so much on using the correct reading that I don't understand what the sentence is trying to say.

Due to taking part in tadoku I have been reading quite a lot in the past few weeks. Most of it is from a source that doesn't provide furigana so to be honest, I am never really sure whether or not I pronounce the words correclty in my head. What I usually do when reading is "reading outloud in my head" and if I come across a word I don't know the reading of I sort of skip it. If I know the meaning of the word I can still understand the sentence and even if the word is new to me I can usually understand what is going on.

What I noticed is this: sometimes I come across a kanji that I know but I forgot it's reading and after seeing the same word again a few pages later I can soemhow "magically" remember it's reading. It's odd. It does give me hope though that reading plus studiying unknown readings via an SRS as you encounter them might be a good way to pick up readings.

Also: I am thinking of picking up Tobira once I have worked through both Minna No Nihongo books (again). I have read some good things about Tobira so I am wondering what you think about it.

I haven't gotten too deep into either Minna no Nohongo or とびら. I will definitely update about とびら as I get into it though. My initial impression is that it's very similar to the 中級 Minna book. You may not get much from とびら having completed that already.

Ah, I see. Well, I am working through the beginner Minna No Nihongo books as my basic grammar seems to be lacking at times. I haven't worked with any books after the Minna no Nihongo II level so I think Tobira might be useful.

I got a schedule change at work and am retaking the Japanese 202 course again as an audit. I'm pretty
excited. The Spanish class I was in had a retired Air Force officer who knew a lot and had good war / travel
stories but spoke a lot of English compared to the other teachers. He even acknowledged that and said he
would try not to but I am suspecting the other students will encourage more English. If I take Spanish I'll
choose a different professor I think since I'm plenty able to follow a teacher speaking all Spanish.

I'm excited about the Japanese class. I know there was a kid who grew up in Japan sort of beforing coming to
the states and another smart student. I'm hoping they're good. We did a lot if grammar last year and I can
review it myself but it's more fun in a class. It'll start next week.

I was just looking at the lyrics for Traveling. I haven't looked at song lyrics hardly at all and that's a waste. Part of it is just that using itunes to make playlists is a mysterious pain in the butt for me that I haven't wanted to deal with. I just put on Pandora and that's it. Anyway. The lyrics are so simple. It's weird looking at stuff that you haven't seen since you were a beginner and thought it was impossible to figure out. This is the site.. it has kanji lyrics but an unfortunate kanji info feature that messes with rikai-sama.

I was checking the website you gave and could not see any lyrics other than in romajis.
Considering your level, have you tried typing on google the name of the song followed by
歌詞 (かし)? It's just my opinion but I think it'd help. :)

Thanks for the tip on searching google for Japanese sites with lyrics. I've been meaning to try it but I don't
even seem to use English ones with them.. Well that site had kanji for ウタダ songs anyway. I don't know if
I've used it for other artists.

Not a lot to update. My class started so I'm redoing 202 again and it's fun. It's more relaxing this time since
everything is review. It might get boring after a while but probably not. It's review but it's Japanese and as
long as it's Japanese I'll probably enjoy it. For whatever reasons I haven't been reading much the past week.
I'm behind on reviewing heisig and haven't done my kanji writing vocab deck based off iknow. I was doing the
packet for my class and it amazed me how rusty I am at writing out words using kanji properly. It's enough to
make me want to give up and throw in the towel and just learn to recognize stuff.

Was tired last night but wanted to read a bit and ended up staying up and finishing another volume of ヒカルの碁. I'm really glad I ordered the whole series although the cost was a bit up there with the shipping included. Good for my ego, I can read a whole volume in a couple hours (I'm sure others can read faster but I'm looking up every word I don't know almost). I'm nearly done with the series however. I'm not even trying to finish it quickly it's just that it's easy to get into. And being a comic book there's not a ton of reading material per page lol. I'm gonna see if my sister can buy me something from the Japanese bookstore down the street from her. I'm hoping the cashier can recommend something appropriate. An actual book meant for teens would probably be best.

I also broke down and renewed my subscription to iKnow. Meh. I am bad with money regarding my hobbies you'd think I'd be broke.. They had a special for 60 bucks for a year's subscription. But I'm thinking I may want to just use the ANKI deck based off their material that has fill in the blanks for their sentences where I can make myself write the word out by hand with kanji. As I posted it seems like my ability to write correctly fades really quickly but I guess I'm not ready to give up just yet.
