I wouldn't mind either (output or input). I like the 100 challenge for which, I'd put 100
min of reading per day thus forcing me to read more, but then again, if the majority
prefers an output activity, I don't mind. In this case though, I'd prefer something to
separate levels like :
beginner: write or learn a simple dialogue
intermediate: translate a small article or dialogue
advanced: write a long dialogue or translate a "longer" article/text

@yuhakko: Yes, specifying levels and scaling accordingly is what I tried to do with
the first challenge, and I intend to stick to it. They're supposed to be friendly
competitions and challenges meant to motivate us, not an exercise in torture.

I promise I will put up a post with all the January participants, I just...I wish
there were more hours in the day :S But I will definitely have it up by the weekend.

I assume, yuhakko, that when you say "translate" you mean from base language to target
language, right?

So, the jury's still out on whether we choose an output-based activity for the
February challenge, or a numerical challenge that could be for either. Who's up for
what? If we can narrow it down, then it would be easier to decide on the kind of
challenge. Let me know in the following posts, and then we can vote.

I'm for a numerical-based challenge, which can still be output-based, since I think we
already did have a go at writing for January. But I'm up for anything if most of you
disagree.

I think an input challenge would be best for me if the amount of words to learn/time to spend on the language and so on is adjusted my level. I've just started learning so I won't be able to write or translate much.

However, if other members prefer to go for an output-based challenge that's fine by me, I'll simply skip it this time :)

I'm for an output-based challenge. It can be numerical (= write a 100-word paragraph. I'd also count translating a 100-word paragraph into English as an output-based challenge because this would involve working on the text really intensively, something I personally have trouble doing, in terms of motivation, patience, practice etc. What I wouldn't like to see would be challenges such as "read 100 words", "listen to 100 minutes of audio", "do 100 Anki reps", but this I've already made myself clear about in my previous post, I assume. Now, translating even into source language involves a little more involvement than a passive challenge, indeed, so I count it as an output challenge, too.

Maggie Sensei has excellent explanations on just about any sticky point in the Japanese language structure, and she explains it
better than textbooks, or grammar references, or anything else I've seen really. Just general language and and tons of examples to
really drive the point home. Thank you, kyukumber!
