I'd like to interject by bringing to attention the fact that Quebec does have a great
dictionary, comprising both standard and colloquial language. Has anyone heard of Antidote, from the software
company "Druide informatique"?

It is only available in digital format, but there you go.. :-)
If someone were to provide the trees, hard copies would be a possibility too..

Thanks, that certainly looks impressive. Here's the description
in French, and a shorter description
in English .

And the the home page for Druide also shows a number of
other language-learning resources, such as a visual dictionary and some massive (dead-tree version) reference
tools.

Yes Antidote is excellent and very practical, although not as complete as the Robert I'd say. I use it very often, and I
have for years, especially since it's so easy to just look for a word but even for expressions, synonyms, antonyms,
and so on. Various regional words and meanings are included, as are the optional "new spellings" of the words that
were modified through the now famous and (I think) absurd reprogramming of the language's superficial features
known as "la nouvelle orthographe". Some proper nouns are included (countries, states, etc.) with some limited
information.
The program also features a highly performant correction application which you can tweak to your needs. Of course,
it's often wrong and must be "tamed", so to speak, but it's probably the best one there is for now. It's also very
user-friendly. It's one great Quebec product, that's for sure.
