I don't have any resolutions. Those usually don't work. BUT I have discovered I like short challenges like the 6WC, so I plan on doing more of those. In that spirit, I am going to try French as a new language for which I feel very familiar, and I'll try Russian again as something I used to do but want to improve.

Musically, I am doing a one month piano challenge in January, and I'm very much looking forward to that.

Language Resolution -

I want to get my German to a reasonably high level. It's my best language but still not that great. I'm still relatively new to language learning. I spent the first year or so on German, but the last few years I have dabbled in a few other languages, learned a bit of Japanese, a bit of Korean, and have let my German sit stagnant going back to it here and there to perform maintenance. I want to spend at least half of the year primarily focused on getting German to a point where I can use it in social situations without much effort.

I'm also interested in the 6 week challenges, so perhaps I might take breaks from German by doing them. 24 weeks of 6WCs, 28 weeks of German in 2012 sounds like a good split.

Reach the same level of writing that I have in spoken Chinese.
I am a complete beginner in Italian, but by the end of the year I want to be able to read
a short novel with somewhat simple language, with the help of a dictionary.
That's it for languages. I also want to start going to the gym and get an average of 8
out of 10 (at least) at university. And I want to start cooking my own food and be
tidier.

Personally, I don't meaningfully segment my life into year-long increments, so I've never really clicked with the concept of "New Year's Resolutions" (I'd rather just identify goals to which I'd aspire for the rest of my life).

That said, my very short answer would be:

- My New Year's Resolution is to not need one by this time next year.

My slightly longer, clarified answer would be:

- My New Year's Resolution is to develop lifelong habits that are congruous to my lifelong aspirations, so that one year from now, my resolution would simply be to not change anything. :)

My longer answer of specific things I'd like to accomplish in the near-future, thus overlapping with 2012:

- study for the CPA exam so that I'll be able to pass it over the span of 2013 (easier said than done)

- read at least three of the following:
Corporate Finance
QuickBooks 2010 for Dummies
Managerial Accounting for Managers
Management Accounting: Principles and Applications
Principles of Taxation for Business and Investment Planning
International Financial Reporting Standards: A Practical Guide
How to Read a Financial Report: Wringing Vital Signs Out of the Numbers

- maintain a natural (i.e., non-processed) pescetarian diet
— (note: by "diet", I don't mean eating less)

- physically:
— run a six-minute mile
— perform planche pushups
— perform handstand pushups
— perform one-handed chinups (both arms)
— perform one-handed pushups (both arms)

- learn on guitar (all instrumental fingerstyle arrangements):
— Tears (X-Japan)
— Ave Maria (Schubert)
— Yuki no Hana (Mika Nakashima)
— an original composition I wrote

I'd love to learn some piano pieces, but the AC adapter for my digital piano is lost (note my usage of the passive voice..).
Thus, I guess my new year's resolution would be to find a replacement AC adapter...

- Finally, since this is a language-learning forum:

(Note: This is rather incomprehensible due to extensive shorthand notation, but conceptually, its structure is fairly straightforward to follow.)

— complete Korean until and including Let's Speak Korean (series 2 & 3)
— complete Spanish until and including "Jason" (YouTube channel—languagenow)
— complete Mandarin until and including "Glossika" (YouTube channel—eponymous)
— complete Japanese until and including "Tae Kim" (website—www.guidetojapanese.org)

As you can see, I have a busy year ahead of me.

Moreover, I know it sounds ludicrous, but I actually omitted a lot of things (including dozens of specific books and guitar pieces, as well as all the other languages beyond my chosen four that I'll undoubtedly be tempted to study).

All this with a full-time job. Blech. Perhaps one of my resolutions should be to quit my job so as to have enough time for my other resolutions...

Oh, and one last thing:

QUOTED FOR TRUTH.

I vow not to pick up Basque during the entire course of 2012. I'll be hard, of course, but I think I can manage it.

I'm not usually into New Year's resolutions, but I guess it wouldn't be a bad idea to set some goals for
this year. For this forum, I'll focus on linguistic goals.

1) Reach high conversational level in Spanish. I'm planning to focus on Spanish for February's 6WC,
which should help me get there faster.

2) Reach intermediate (at least) in spoken Japanese and learn 200+ kanji.

3) Start Beginner's Mandarin course.

That's it for now. I may revise this later.
