I don't know why everyone is searching around when we have had Radice's
Teach Yourself Bengali all these years.

Then you just have to settle down and write অ আ ই (that is in Bangla, if you don't
have the font) et al over and over about a thousand times.

I have some scanned copies of pages from a book of nursery rhymes which I
bought in Calcutta. It is good for beginners because the nursery rhymes are in
English, but written in both English and Bengali. So in Bangla it comes out
"Heekaari deekaari daak / Di maaus ren aap di klaak" etc. but since an English-
speaker knows the words already it is a bit easier to practice with. Not to mention
cute illustrations. I'd be happy to upload it if someone can tell me where.

Bengali language handbook available from ERIC looks very very interesting if you already know a fair bit of Bengali.

However opening up yet another academic's version of Bengali transliteration makes me want to weep. At least the
Bangla typeface isn't too bad, even if the English has awful old typography.

Hello,

I'm going to West Bengal in about three months. I'll be there for three months and want to get a head start on Bengali. I am thinking about concentrating on speaking and just learning the fundamentals scriptwise.

I see there still is a dearth of decent audio-based Bengali learning materials in the Pimsleur style. Or am I overlooking something? It's been a while since the last post.

Thanks

Yes, I don't think there are any audio-only courses for Bengali, I've never seen any.
You might find Colloquial Bengali useful, as it apparently focuses more on conversation than Teach Yourself Bengali, but the basic format is textbook + audio. I think they use script in the book but you might find the TY to be better for teaching the script.
There is a Unilang user called Meera who is actively learning Bengali and using TY Bengali & Colloquial Bengali. You might get more information from them.

I actually got Teach Yourself Bengali from the library this week and after skimming through it, it really seems a very good book. I like the way how the sounds/letters are introduced subsequently, instead of overwhelming the reader with the entire alphabet right at the beginning.
