It has been over a week since I posted an update. I haven't put anywhere near as much
work as I should have due to me feeling sleep deprived for absolutely no reason. Then
whenever I actually got out of bed to do work I'd waste time on YouTube and likes
(mostly watching Brazilian music videos).

Pimsleur is starting to become boring so I'm putting it on pause for a while and going
to complete Michel Thomas in the meantime. It shouldn't take me too long to complete
especially with the goals I'm thinking of aiming for.

I couldn't find quality subs in the limited focused time I had on the PC so I just
used 2 songs i managed to get stuck in my head from the Brazilian Portuguese version
of the movie Frozen (which I only just watched in English 2 days prior)

I think I wrote it before but seeing how it has helped others around the forum I've
decided I need goals to help keep me focused and stop me wandering around
aimlessly. I just nee to figure out how I'm going to break it down from the humongous
distant goal which seems almost impossible to achieve, into major milestones and
further into minor tasks with estimated completion times. I'm also going to use
rewards of fun things I actually enjoy doing in to motivate myself.

Anyway that is enough negativity I think. Time for some positives.

I seem to built a sort of habit of reviewing Anki throughout the day and jumping on
LyricsTraining just before bed as a sort of relaxation/wind-down.

I've downloaded two series from DW (one about football in Africa and another about
youth) as well as downloading season 1 of X-men: the animated series. If anyone is
young enough to have actually watched it they would remember how great it was and I'm
genuinely excited to start watching even with limited comprehension. (I'm a big kid at
heart). I'm also on the lookout for some other childhood cartoons such as Dragon Ball
Z, Jackie Chan Adventures and the Rugrats to save for the future. Starting tomorrow
I'm going to make sure I get work done as well as Start to time my active study times
as it will make it easier to keep a track of time spent as well as make it easier to
keep anyone reading updated.

Next post will be tomorrow in which I will add the start of TAC as well as a list of
resources & an early draft of the goals I mentioned earlier.

This post officially confirms the start of my TAC 2015.

I have a fair few resources bookmarked but for now I'll just add what is in current
use in both languages & link you back in future posts regarding any updates to the
list. I'll also do a review on any resources I use and complete as well as put a link
to the specific page next to the name.

Portuguese Resources:
  • Michel Thomas Foundation & Advanced
  • Duolingo
  • Anki: self made
    deck following
    the guidelines of Fluent-Forever methodology so essentially there are no translations
    to L1 but instead hand picked pictures
  • The little prince PDF & audio
  • LyricsTraining.com
  • Peppa Pig: DON'T LAUGH. I saw my
    youngest niece watching it in English so decided to watch whilst I improve my
    listening comprehension and progress in the language
  • Films/series: mostly
    dubbed will give a review if I can depending on how much I liked/disliked it[/LI}
  • Harry Potter: first two books of the series which I adored as a child. Also have
    the audio versions for L+R
  • Pimsleur 1-3
  • DLI Course: shout-out to
    Iguanamon once again for directing me to this. Never knew a course could delve so
    deep
  • Music: got a whole range of artists in a playlist on spotify from Luan
    Santana to João Gilberto
Japanese Resources:
  • Genki 1 & 2: loads of good reviews so I decided to work my way steadily
    through it
  • Tae Kims grammar guide
  • Erin's challenge: fun beginner video
    series which is a nice intro to the language
  • Anki: I've begun preparing a
    similar deck to that of Portuguese but will focus on how the radicals build up the
    Kanji primarily
  • Music: mostly anime songs and songs I discover when I'm
    playing OSU!
In terms of goals Japanese seems
sorted and straightforward. Portuguese on the other hand is proving a little more
tricky. Most of what I've thought up so far seem to revolve around the resources so
hopefully in the future I'll be able to think of some that are more precise. Like with
the resources this will be continuously updated to reflect progress & if anything new
comes to mind.

Portuguese Goals (as of 29/06/15):
  • Complete DLI by end of November
  • Be able to to walk into the Brazilian coffee
    shop by my flat & have a general conversation by the end of the year
  • Be able
    to watch a film without subs and comprehend about 70% or above by the end of the
    year
  • Complete both Michel Thomas and Pimsleur by September
  • Complete duolingo by end of July

Japanese Goals (as of 03/01/15):
  • Complete Genki 1 & 2 by September
  • Learn & be able to recognize 1/4 of the
    Jōyō kanji by October
  • Start using native materials in the autumn
  • Take & pass
    the JLPT N5 exam in December

I can't rightly laugh about you using Peppa Pig for Portuguese when I'm using Chi's Sweet
Home and Sailor Moon as some of my beginner material for Japanese. Chi's Sweet Home is
focused at such a young audience that I've never seen Kanji displayed at all, even on the
title sequences, but rather just pure hiragana. Sailor Moon does have Kanji but always
includes furigana except for things like names in the credits.

I won't lie I have spent some time watching this show. I find it funny at times and
actually quite enjoyable even though I'm almost 2 decades older than it's target
audience. It's probably due to my love of cats & the way he's (I'm assuming he) always
getting into trouble. I suspect he has similar characteristics to a young Garfield but
with less lasagne.

Having that show available also readily invalidates claims of "no time to watch any
Japanese media" since the episodes are literally 3 minutes each. I usually end up watching
them in batches though. I can't recall watching less than say 4 at a time. Even watching 8
in one sitting is still only roughly the length of a 30 minute TV show without ads.

One thing I have found strangely difficult about the show, though, is that despite the fact
that Chi's lines are very simple compared to the human characters in the show, his overly
"cute" pronunciation makes him more difficult to understand. This is particularly notable in
the intro song where they show the Kana for the lyrics and Chi's pronunciation throws me
on words I already know well.
