Heh... I'm surprised somebody actually read my log! Thank you! Steal all you want! :) Nice to see someone studying Portuguese and Japanese! I seem to be quite busy nowadays, but let me know if you need any assistance. As for your question - and I'm still a beginner in Portuguese myself - but "a nove e meia" seems odd. Just a small update this time as there isn't much to report in about (also I'm
absolutely knackered). I let myself get sidetracked quite a bit over the past few days but have managed to fit in study periods wherever possible as well as listening to tons of music in both TL's most of my days. In terms of Portuguese I'm yet to continue on to the next chapter as it;s only on my PC and didn't have much time in front of the PC. I've been meaning to get a tablet so this seems as the perfect excuse once the Boxing Day/January sales arrive. Didn't continue on Pimsleur as I repeated lesson 13 twice as I couldn't get my head around the pronouncing of two verb forms next to each other in a sentence. I think I've got it down now. I've been using Duolingo daily and I'm currently up to numbers (which I'll quickly test out of) and clitic pronouns (some call it object pronouns :/). I think I've already met my nemesis in the language. I can't get to grips with it & think I need to do an extensive Google search for any guides. On the Japanese side of the table, I've finished learning the katakana now. I wanted to do this before I moved onto the Genki course. I'm pumped to jump in & get started. I suspect the Japanese post's will get longer now I'm learning the basics. This week i plan to get to grips with the native materials I have acquired and need to remind myself that a course won't teach you the entirety of a language. I've also found some cheap (I'm a former student x_X) but highly rated community tutors on italki, so over the coming weeks I plan to have a few sessions and see if any fit my personality and learning style. Procrastination has reared it ugly head once again. On a normal day (like I know what
normal is) it can take me around 5 hours to study whereas it will take someone else 2 hours max. I need to find a way to nip this in the bud before it becomes a major problem. Nevertheless, I have been plugging away and making progress which is positive. Portuguese
Japanese
One thing I've noted in both languages is that writing things down helps them stick better but I'm not necessarily a person who can write on paper for longer periods as I can never sit down comfortably enough (plus my once beautiful handwriting looks hideous to my eyes). My main focus for the rest of the week is to get through the Units in DLI & Genki as well as minimize the amount of procrastination I do. I feel like it is cutting into my time spent with native materials & I can see that hampering my progress in the future. P.S. Food for thought. Might include my guitar in my learning to make it a bit more fun. Not many tabs/chords available for foreign songs unless their major hits. 1 person has voted this message useful | |||

For Japanese, Genki and Erin's Challenge should be enough for a few weeks. Don't stress
yourself with native materials too early, especially with Japanese. For Portuguese, native materials, to some degree, are probably necessary, since that course is quite old. Very useful, but old. 2 persons have voted this message useful | |||

Only a small update
Been swamped with holiday related activities all week so I haven't made much progress course wise. I have been keeping up with my anki reviews but the input is so boring I can I only bring myself to do it for longer periods on a Sunday whilst watching football (soccer) or in very small chunks early in the morning when catching up on anime. I've come to the discovery that (accurate) subs in Portuguese may be somewhat of a myth. Even the films on Amazon seem to only have English subtitles if any subs at all. It seems I have to manage with song lyrics and transcripts of podcasts until I can survive alone. Bit of a shame as I wanted to try some subs2srs in the new year. I found an audio-book and PDF of the Harry Potter books so may try a slightly edited version of L/R. On the Japanese side of the spectrum, there's a list on a Japanese learning website similar to AJATT which ranks media in order of difficulty which is very helpful and will look into in more detail when I've advanced.
