大相撲11月場所(九州場所)九日目に、
東横綱 白鵬関（宮城野部屋）が、 西関脇 逸ノ城関 (湊部屋）に上手出し投げで勝ち、 8勝1敗になりました。 逸ノ城関 (湊部屋）は、 4勝5敗になりました。 Ichinojo got his left handed outside grip and so did Hakuho. Hakuho is the best belt specialist from all times. He did not even give Ichinojo time to do anything else, other than winning as the same way he did last basho. Ichinojo lacks in speed which make him vulnerable against the Yokozuna who never allows his opponents to take sumo. The question is how to beat the greatest Yokozuna of all times. Ichinojo lacks in experience, and I were him, I would go to Hakuho’s heya and practice with him every single day. Hakuho made his kachikoshi standing at 8-1 and Ichonojo stands at 4-5. He still have chances to make his kachikoshi. I think he still have bouts against Kisenosato and Kotoshogiku. His tachiai was good and when Goeido got too low, he simply got thrust down. Goeido barely has power for an Ozeki. With the loss, he stands at 4-5 which made his kachikoshi more troublesome than ever. He still has to fight against 2 Yokozuna and 2 Ozeki. I guess he will lose against Hakuho and Kakuryu if he keeps fighting poorly as he has been doing so far. I am wondering how is going to be demoted first, Goeido or Kotoshogiku. Perhaps they will be demoted altogether. I am at the point where I have to deal with the following type of vocabularies: slight nuances and connotations; proverbs, sayings, idiomatic expressions (idiomatic四字熟語); regionalisms; archaisms; jargon or technical language and so on. Sometimes I forget the reading of certain characters, though I still remember semantically what it means. They are usually infrequent characters which don’t belong to the compulsory list (total of 2136) one adult should know. I have formally studied more than 2800 ideograms when I was young. By that time I studied its usage, examples and nuances in a context, but due to the fact I have been more than a decade without practicing much, I have forgotten a lot of readings. I don’t always necessarily check all the words or expressions, especially those that are Sino-Japanese or native Japanese words. I tend to check more often foreign origin words, especially in certain fields of my interest. I can say that the meaning of the loan words in Japanese I have been reading differs from the original one in its usage. Sometimes I do flashcards using Anki; sometimes I do wordlists, as since it is handwritten because I tend to remember things better (at long-term) when I have written them down in an organized notebook. That may be different for younger people who have developed a symbiotic relationship with their electronic devices such as notebooks, smartphones, tablets, and so on. There are differences between receptive and productive vocabulary. Even if I recognize and claim to understand many words such as the ones I read this week, I bet most Japanese native speakers have never used them actively and perhaps never will. This is very striking when reading literature or any other old texts, for example. Right now I'm reading a short story for a little study on vocabulary and I see on every page at least one word or expression that I have never used in my life. An individual's productive vocabulary is made up of a very small set of shared common words and structures plus the specialized vocabulary of one's profession and interests. So, I don’t get bothered by these unknown terms I have been facing lately. I don’t see the point to make certain words or expressions active since I am not studying as an academic anymore. Some of the dictionaries I have been using include 国語辞典：広辞苑、大辞林、大辞泉、明 鏡、新辞林、新明解 etc. However, I have also been using類義語、諺 and some specific dictionaries related to history and other terminology of my interest as well because I need some specific definitions depending on the book I am working on. Learning is an ongoing process. You may get to a point where you would consider yourself at advanced fluency, but you will always continue to pick up unfamiliar words and phrases if you want to explore the infinite possibilities of the target language. To summarize what I did last week: +I watched eleven episodes of the second season of蛍の光. I think both 藤木直人 and綾瀬 はるか are good actors and I am looking forward for another Japanese drama. It wasn’t a bad drama at all, but I was expecting much more from season 2. +I reviewed the first and second week of N1 総まとめ（漢字編 、文法編、語彙編）. I almost finished 読解編 in a week and it was probably the the easiest book for me. I did one week (6 days) in one day each. The seventh day I will try when I have more patience. + I did some N1 mock exams. Let’s say 5 each day from Monday to Friday. Fortunately I have been doing well. I am just wondering if I have read the JLPT notice carefully. If I am not wrong, I was supposed to take “Language Knowledge (Vocabulary/Grammar)・ Reading” section in 110 minutes. I am pretty sure I have printed the whole section. So, among 30 (or few pages more), I have been doing it in an average of 40 minutes with a reasonable score, making two or three mistakes per mock test, mostly in the grammar section. I was told that N1 grammar topics I would find in texts such as thesis etc, but I have never seen some of them except in JLPT old tests and mock exams. I don’t see the point to learn something I simply don’t get to see. My acquaintance is studying for the exam and one of the things makes him say that there is not much time to take the test is the fact that he reads the whole text. I don’t read the whole text of the reading section. I have never read it to get the answers... It just confuses you, not to say that one can save a lot of time there. + Another acquaintance has asked how long it takes me to read a manga. Well, my average time to read each manga book (for instance, 幽☆遊☆白書) was 15 minutes. I have never measured my time before. I just pick up 4 manga per hour every day. + I watched 25 episodes of聖闘士星矢 Lost in Canvas. I thought this was the Saint Seiya episodes my colleagues have been telling me, but I was wrong. There is another one I have never watched before. Anyway, this was one of the few anime I liked. + I watched the first 9 days of sumo tournament. + 2 days (Saturday and Sunday) of Japanese practice with Japanese people. It was good to brush up my rusty Japanese skills. English One of the most important things in our lives is the motivation in order to achieve any goals. Saying that having a good lifestyle improves the overall quality of our lives is a cliché. It is more important to know how people try to stay both physically and mentally healthy since this is one of the keys for success to maintain or learn any language. Nowadays I have good eating habits most of times and I try to get enough sleep every night whenever possible. I usually go to the gym to strengthen my general body and consequently stay mentally healthy as well. I think these points ignored by many people I talk to have helped me to retain the information at long-term, obviously because I was feeling top notch. Some of my acquaintances argue that going to the gym is a waste of time and that I could use one hour (or more) by exclusively reading or watching some stuff. I usually listen to music which helps me relax and also acquire new vocabulary or expressions while I am at the gym. + I watched four episodes of True detective season 1. I didn’t like it, despite its high rate among its spectators. I think it was quite predictable since I have watched something similar in another language, though it was much deeper. + I have taken some conversation classes, but I didn’t like it. I took about five lessons with an Australian teacher, but she wanted me to do things out of my goals. I think she didn’t understand me when I have stated my opinion over a fact. Sometimes I don’t think there should be an answer or even something such as “correct” or “incorrect” concerning certain topics. It is a matter of point of view which depends exclusively in the person’s background and personality. So, let’s say that I was asked whether killing someone is wrong or not. Well, this kind of questions is too generic and it depends on the country’s law, someone’s personality, and the situation of which you are talking about, among many other important facts. If there is someone having mental illness and he starts killing your girlfriends’ whole family without a reason, but just randomly because that person thinks himself that he should simply kill everyone, if I have a gun and considering that I know how to use it, why not kill him in order to survive? It is a matter of my own protection. By the way, this situation has happened in a country whose national constitution I am not aware about. The person considered to have some mental problems has killed random people who he has never met before. When I tried to discuss this matter according to my point of view, my teacher disagreed with me and started arguing over some other irrelevant facts to that situation. Furthermore, I don’t like to pay for a lesson in which the teacher speaks much more than me all the time and doesn’t even try to give me the opportunity to talk. It was like 30% of my talking and 70% of her talking. Well, she speaks even more than my ex-girlfriend! Haha I think she got pissed off and suddenly started saying that my pronunciation needed to be corrected all out of blue. She was correcting me word by word. Let’s say that I was stressing the wrong syllable. Well, okay, but then, if I were her, I would try to give an example in a context and try to work on it only when needed. Do you guys memorize each word’s stress by a long list? I don’t. This kind of method doesn’t work with me. So, I kindly reported her that I would appreciate if next time she gives me more examples of each word she claimed that I spoke wrongly, but in a context. The intonation of the whole sentence makes more sense to me. I have hired another professional teacher on Italki. I have explained all my short and mid-term to her. I thought I have made my point very clear, but I wasn’t sure what her goal toward my classes was during the class. I think she has not prepared what I asked for (and what she has agreed in advance). I usually send a very long message explaining what I am aiming for during the class. Of course, the lessons are never just about questions I have and we should practice conversations or whatever else I feel is my weakest area at that particular moment. During the class, I try to stick in a subject, no matter I like it or not, because I do feel the need to learn how to rephrase sentences. If things are still wrong, I ask for words that I am missing or that I should remove in order to rebuild the sentences in a more natural way. I do not keep change the topic when I feel that the idea is beyond my level to express because I know I can learn a lot of new words, expressions, idioms and so on. I have took lessons with other professional teachers at Italki as well, and it has been very disappointing so far. Teachers do not understand that I have my own goals that might be different from other students of her. During the session I can feel that all of the teachers I have tried are quite inflexible. It is very easy to spot the bad teachers as well. They usually want to decide for me. Good teachers can give you grammar explanation, exercises to work with your weakest areas, send you some websites you have asked for (especially for English), figure out the best sentences to rephrase what you have said, and so on. My teachers are native speakers of English, but they could not explain me many points I have asked for. They are inexperienced teachers. Korean + I read all the 25 units of TTMIK 1. I listened to all of them until unit 20. It takes too much time to listen to the whole audio. I am looking for another course since this TTMIK1 is too boring. + I watched all the episodes of “I hear your voice”. Chinese + I memorized the 150 words and expressions from HSK1 list using anki I can tell the meaning, but still have to memorize the tones of 50 words or expressions. I only pick up something I really want to do. If I don't want to do it, there's no point, really. I find funny because among my colleagues who are polyglots or language enthusiastic, they keep telling me I should do this and that. They have recommended me tons of courses without even bothering to ask what are my specific goals for each language. This is one the things that bothers me at most... Another language I am willing to add one more language. I am start in December. In meanwhile, I would like to take a look on the internet to see whether I can find good resources for A1 and A2 level. This is one of the reasons he is not remaining in sanyaku ranking on consistent basis. Kakuryu's yotsuzumo has been superb this basho. Similarly to the other young rikishi, Ichinojo and Terunofuji both have power and good defense, but they both lack in speed. Terunofuji usually gets into bad position too often. I am not sure how he can improve the foot work. Goeido desperately tried Kubinage which doesn't work much against the top ranking rikishi. I am not surprised about his poor performance and score (4-6). He will definitely not make his kachikoshi, considering that he still have to face Kakuryu who is sharp this basho, and also Hakuho, the strongest rikishi ever. 逸ノ城 Ichinojo faced Aminishi, one of the best technicians. Ichinojo won using his oshi attack and stands at 5-5. I am cheering for him to make his kachikoshi. Kakuryu stands at 10-0, Hakuho at 9-1, and Harumafuji, Kisenosato, Tochinoshin and Kyokutenho at 8-2. He is charging with his head too down and this is one of the reasons he kept losing in a similar way very often. Goeido has won 3 consecutive basho against Hakuho, but today I bet he would lose. He has been performing very badly. Everyone knows that Kakuryu is high skilled at retreating and slap down techniques, but today he didn’t have much time for his tricks, despite Kisenosato’s slow footwork. The Ozeki maintained his balance and kept with his oshi attack without stopping. Both rikishi stands at 10-1. The rivalry of them stands in favor to Kisenosato with 26-13 (or 26- 15?). Harumafuji is already 8-3, not a good score for a Yokozuna. Let’s see if he can win all his remaining bouts. I expect him at least to win 3 of his 4 last bouts. One of the reasons I love sumo so much is that the Japanese national sport has great emphasis on character, respect, dignity, behavior and honor for an opponent following old traditions. Yokozuna Hakuho is the greatest Mongolian rikishi; former Mongolian Yokozuna Asashoryu being the close second, and one of the greatest rikishi of all time, if not the greatest. Tomorrow Hakuho will reach former Yokozuna Taiho’s record and break it by next year. 平成26年（2014年）大相撲11月場所(九州場所)
千秋楽に、 東横綱 白鵬関（宮城野部屋）が、 西横綱 鶴竜関(井筒部屋）に 送り出しで勝ち、 14勝1敗で32回目の幕内優勝を 決めました。 鶴竜関(井筒部屋）は、 12勝3敗で九州場所を終えました。 白鵬の32回優勝、 大記録達成となった。 白鵬の目からは大粒の涙が落ちる。 この気持ち、大横綱にしか分かりません。 何はともあれ、おめでとうございます。 Hakuho avoided at all cost the rematch. Hakuho’s tachiai is always very good, very consistent, and well balanced. Today he got a very good position (morozashi technique), not giving time to Kakuryu to recover. Hakuho has a big advantage against Kakuryu, standing at 34-4 in their rivalry. Hakuho is likely to break former Daiyokozuna Taiho next basho (hatsubasho). Actually I think that he can win at least 40 tournaments until the end of his career. Of course, it is not an easy accomplishment after especially after breaking Taiho’s record. Perhaps he will need to work on his motivation to continue fighting as a professional sumo wrestler. He will be at kadoban next basho. The last time I have seen two Ozeki at kadoban was 14 years ago at Nagoya basho, perhaps. He lost his speed with his massive unnecessary belly.
