This is just one set of her friends, typically she makes plans with them once or twice a month, so it

Nope, sorry. I already made up my mind. She has to go. And since you aren't learning any languages, I think you
should leave too.

You're tiptoeing around without ever telling us what the language is. I'm going to guess that their behaviour is in part cultural. (If I were braver, I might posit the language could be Chinese, but I won't go that far.) I would have to guess that not using the language with other guests would be perceived ruder than not using English with you? Either that or this is one of the rare occasions they have to use the language... And to be honest, this seems to be a situation you know little about (since you haven't indicated that you know or study any other language). A lot of people, if not most, feel a strong need to use their first language every now and then when living abroad. I would say you either send a message and simply not go to the supper, or else learn the language. Or else you could try and be less shy and strike a conversation with one person.

Oh my, I wasn't even PMSing! Thank you.
My vote also goes to Chinese.

aabram that is a good analogy and I would be more than happy if just one or two people took turns slowing down so I could keep up. I don't expect all other people to speak exclusively English all night. I just think it would be nice if they tried. |

But do you try?

Wow, what an unfortunate typo. Sorry about that. I think it was due to lack of vitamin B.

I read in an etiquette book that it is rude to speak in a foreign language that someone
in the dinner party can't understand unless someone translates for him or her.
