Of course I don't know my own Christmas presents yet, but my German Italian conversation friend will receive a self-made photo calendar with all kinds trees and bushes with my handwritten descriptions all written in Italian. Probably I will get a language calendar from her, let's see for which language.

The concept of Christmas gift-giving is a little beyond my comprehension and I don't intend to give or receive any gifts this year. However, I did buy myself a big fat grammar for Japanese which is due to arrive in just two more days. And waiting is hard. So it's almost like Christmas.

My dad doesn't like to read for long periods at a time, so I got him Charles Berlitz's 'Native Tongues' for Christmas. I got the book recently, and really enjoyed it. It has lots of interesting language facts, but they're short and self-contained, so you can pick up the book and read from anywhere.

If someone's looking for some ideas, I just remembered a fun little book that any
language geek would enjoy, but especially those studying Italian, French, Spanish, or
Latin. "Idiom's Delight" by Suzanne Brock contains the literal English translations and
English equivalents of various idioms in those languages, and it's quite a fun little
read, illuminating bits of culture and some of the more humorous idioms. It contains the
idiom in the original language, the literal English translation, and then the equivalent
phrase and perhaps a comment about it by the author.

A long life has showed me that God helps she who helps herself when it comes to Christmas presents, so I buy my own.
This year I have gotten myself an overdose of language CD-ROMs "Talk more". I got Ukrainian for beginners, Mandarin for beginners and Icelandic for beginners and intermediate learners, plus a UNIFORUM beginner course in Mandarin - it is not particularly good but, I am not really serious about Mandarin, so it is just to get a hint of it.

An Amazon gift card makes me happy, Christmas or birthday. It'll always be put to good use.

For sure, a gift card is always good, especially when you can buy language materials with it))). As for me, I just got a 50 dollar gift-card (credit card, so I can use it pretty much anywhere I wish), so I may buy a cool notebook and pen-set to fuel my motivation for studying...I mean, who doesn't enjoy (at least sometimes) a colorful pen set when learning grammar from a boring-old grammar?
