Just thought I'd let those who don't subscribe to his channel know that the Professor has posted a video on extensive reading and vocabulary range. He doesn't go into polyliteracy proper, but he talks about how many words you need to know in order to read a serious book, the fact that most people don't have enough, and how they can go about building that range of vocabulary. Well worth watching!

Very well worth watching.

Vocabulary building is a major problem in any language. And the (research finding) threshold for reading is high:
98%. Getting to 98% of an online newspaper is a feat. What frustrates me is that the sort of graded readers that can
help get you there aren't very easy to track down (provided they even exist). I loathe interrupting my reading to grab
a dictionary—but sometimes it is critical. A kludge I can live with is text on one side and low-frequency glossary on
the facing page, but even that needs careful use.

Anyway, I digress. The video is worth watching.

Did anyone try the vocabulary test? My estimate was 15,700 word families, though the test says it's only accurate up to 14,000 word families.

I think it was somewhat biased like the Prof says. There were a number of words that I'm sure are Anglo centric.

I tried it. I forget my exact score, but it was a bit over 25 thousand.
