Perhaps an historical example: I have read that when Heinrich Schliemann (1822-1890) was living in Amsterdam and trying to learn English, one thing he did was to find a church where services were conducted in English. Then, "[o]n Sundays he would attend two English church services, standing in a corner of the church so that he would be able to repeat to himself every word of the sermon."
Of course, he could not walk around in the church while doing this, and probably could not speak above a whisper. It's also not clear how much of a time delay there was between him hearing a word and repeating it -- though I don't think it could have been very long, or else he would have lost track of what was being said.
