- Sie sprechen aber wirklich schon sehr gut deutsch!
- Das ist ein nettes Kompliment, aber Sie übertreiben sicher etwas. Ich weiß genau, dass ich noch große Schwierigkeiten habe.
- Schwierigkeiten? Also ich würde gerne Ihre Sprache so gut sprechen wie Sie meine.
- Das könnten Sie sehr schnell. Machen Sie es so wie ich: Jeden Tag eine kleine Lektion! Außerdem ist meine Sprache viel einfacher als Ihre.
- Deutsch soll schwer sein? Das kann ich nicht glauben. Jedes Kind hier spricht doch deutsch.
- Das stimmt, und ich frage mich, wie die alle diese komplizierten Regeln gelernt haben.
- Regeln? Ich habe keine Regeln gelernt, und ich spreche trotdzem hochdeutsch, hoffe ich.
- Woher wissen Sie denn dann immer, wohin man in einem Satz das Verb stellen muss?
- Dass ist doch nicht schwierig, das fühlt man doch!
- Ich leider nicht! Ich fühle das Verb dort, wo es in meiner Sprache steht; und es steht meistens an einem anderen Platz.
- Das muss aber eine komische Sprache sein, wenn man das Verb an einen falschen Platz stellen kann.
- Nicht an einen falschen, an einen anderen!
- Und wo steht es in Ihrer Sprache, wenn ich fragen darf?
- Nun, das ist ziemlich schwierig zu erklären.
- Das habe ich mir gedacht. Ich verstehe jetzt, warum Sie meine Sprache lernen und nicht ich Ihre! Die muss ja ganz schön kompliziert sein.

Translation:

- You already speak German very good!
- That's a nice compliment but you're surely exaggerating. I precisely know that I still have huge problems.
- Problems? I'd very much like to speak your language as good as you speak mine.
- You could do that very quickly. Do as I do: Each day a little lesson! Apart from that my language is a lot easier than yours.
- German ought to be difficult? I can't believe that. Every child speaks German here.
- That's right, and I ask myself how they learnt all these complex rules.
- Rules? I didn't learn any rules and I speak hochdeutsch anyway (hopefully).
- How do you know where a verb in a sentence should be?
- That's not difficult at all, you feel that!
- Unfortunately, I don't! I feel the verb there where it's in my language; and it's in the other place most of the time.
- That must be a funny language if you can place the verb in the wrong place.
- Not in the wrong but in another.
- And where is it in your language?
- Well, it's a bit hard to explain.
- I thought so. I understand now why you learn my language and I don't learn yours.
