You didn't quote right. I suppose you were referring to a previous message. OK. I'll expand a little... Do you consider that somebody who knowns the rules of GO is a GO player? If yes, there are many Go players in the world, and anybody is potentially a GO player, because he could learn the rules in 5 minutes. You would agree that knowing the rules of GO is not sufficient to be considered as a GO player. It would be wiser to define competence levels and put players in categories in which they can compete with people at their level. So, asking how many Go players there are is stupid. One must ask how many are registered at a certain level. There is no world registration for Esperanto speakers, nor for English, nor for Go or Chess Players. The people playing in clubs are a minority compared with those playing outside. The analogy between Go and Chess is even more interesting. The rules of Go are simpler than those of Chess. Does that mean that the Go game must necessarily be reserved to retarded people? Think about it: Esperanto rules are simpler than English (or other languages). Does it mean that the language is inferior? As a japanese playing GO and knowing about Chess you would probably answer: on the contrary. Firstly, I hope the above comments will not be removed. Political correctness has no place in the real world. Seriously.
Secondly, I am taken aback by Art/Art07. He is more passionately against Esperanto than I as a learner am in favour of it! His rants about communism are just that, it's merely his opinion, and not one widely held. And seeing as he's the one who wants to prove its lack of popularity based on numbers, why doesn't he find a reliable source? I can guarantee everyone here that this is the first time I've ever heard such harsh criticism of a language. Politics never came to mind. Not even the ideology of easy communication played as big a part as the simple quest for knowledge. Simply an intellectual pursuit, and a tool for learning Romance languages. It's a shame that a discussion about Esperanto can take such bad turns. Fakte, quite disappointing. 2 persons have voted this message useful |
