Hello everyone

I'm going to be in Spain for a week sometime in June, and I'd like to be able to have
conversations with the natives. I have no particular level in mind, because I've never
taken a language test before, but I want to acquire a rudimentary but useful
conversational ability. So not just 'My name is...', 'I'm from...', but to be able to
haltingly speak about a range of commonplace topics and understand the gist of what
Spanish speakers say.
I can already read French well enough, but I can't speak or understand it spoken, so
for my third language, I want to focus on speaking and oral comprehension.
I'm keeping a public log to keep myself on track and on target. I'm going to update
this log at the end of every day with what I did during that day.

Plan for each day:
Learn 50 new words from Memrise, and review.
Learn a chapter of Assimil and understand everything
Go through half a unit of FSI twice

I'm currently doing the Duolingo Spanish track and should be done in the next few
days. It's a good introduction. After a week or two I will find someone on Skype to
practise with.

Day 1
Achieved:
1. 50 new words
2. 1 Assimil chapter
3. Around ten units of duolingo

Failed to achieve:
1. Half a unit of FSI

Assessment
No excuses: I didn't do the FSI because I'm naturally lazy. I have an hour commute to
uni tomorrow so I'll have time to do a whole unit tomorrow.
I've been looking at this reading listening method I've seen crop up on forums and
blogs. I might try it in a month or two once I've learnt a reasonable amount of words.
Assimil seems promising.
Overall, my first day gave me the impression that Spanish is easier than French.
Consistent pronunciation; every syllable pronounced.

p.s. Does anyone know what the retention rate of these logs is?
