I don't mean to discourage you but 1 year is nothing for Russian. I have also been learning Russian out of obligation: being able to use textbooks published in Russian for learning other languages at which I'm more interested. I started it on November 2012 and I still can't read a novel. I study it at least one hour a day, though. Since about 1 year ago I started to become less worrried about grammar and to watch TV and read novels alongside with translation. I figured out watching a long soap opera with subjects that get repeated all the time and characters that become familar with time helped me at least understand a bit from the spoken language.
