Hi all,

I registered for the polyglot gathering in Berlin a couple of months ago already. I was
very eager to it. My problem now is that I have had a burn out about 10 days ago, and
haven't practiced anything ever since (except for English and Dutch, which are my
strong language and are my studies). I am thus much less eager to language learning,
although I suppose that it's just a break and that I'll return to it soon enough.
Still, in the meantime, I'm not sure that I want to go anymore this year.
Furthermore, the 4 following weeks are the last ones of the semester, and I am going to
have a lot of work, before the exams. I already had to give up coming to the conference
1 or 2 years ago because it was during my exams...
I know that this conference would be the best place on earth for a language addict like
me, but with this burn out, I don't even want to practice any Spanish, Italian, German,
or Esperanto. I thus don't know if I would really enjoy it...

What do you think I should do?

Partly because you seem more than just a hobbyist.

Start studying a few days earlier.

I think everyone understands burnout very well. If you were to go and not speak your
languages, I certainly wouldn't judge you. I say just go and listen, and use the time as
a good excuse to take a break from studying for your exams. :-)

But good luck whatever you decide!

If you decide to go to the gathering in Berlin, you're likely to meet hundreds of friends you didn't know you had. It happened to me and that's why I'm coming back.

I am also deciding if I will go or not. My daughter is now 16 days old :) and I don't have any desire to leave her for four days, but perhaps I'll come for one or perhaps two days.

Anyone have an idea when the best days to come were? I am mostly interested in meeting up with other people from HTLAL and finally getting a chance to put a face to a name.

Four days is indeed "a lot", and I couldn't do that with my studies.
Today, my teacher told me that I would have to make an oral presentation on Monday 4 (I
already knew I would have to make a presentation on a Monday, but I didn't know which
Monday). I am thus again hesitating. I of course also want to come to meet people from
this forum, since I spend much time reading on this forum (less time writing myself),
and see thus many names coming back all the time. And I also of course want to meet
those Youtube and HTLAL polyglot (and all those who are on neither) who can do just
what I dream of doing one day: speaking more languages than I have fingers (if not
fingernails) to count, and meet those people who, whatever the number of languages that
they speak (be it 2 or 20), have just the same passion as I have, and who wouldn't look
at me as an alien (even my girlfriend does it now...).
But with my studies, it is quite dangerous to come...
Furthermore, I suspect that my desire to learn language would racket after the
Conference, while I'm going to have to keep on working until end June.

We could have an HTLAL meetup at the meeting. What about Saturday or Sunday night?

Great idea! According to the programme, room 2 is available for "Free mingling" on Saturday and Sunday night 8 pm. If And according to the list of participants, there's going to be at least a dozen of us. 20+ languages are covered by three Scandinavians. :D
