In June, I met my goals, having read both The Picture of Dorian Gray and The Joy Luck club, I just made 15 hours in
Mandarin study (working through assimil chinese 1 as I learn to write and read the characters on this second pass, Memrise and CCTV "Growing up Chinese") and 10 hours of Japanese (mostly Pimsleur, some Colloquial Japanese). Chinese: 15 hours, 0 minutes Japanese: 11 hours, 5 minutes Spanish: 4 hours, 35 minutes German: 1 hour, 55 minutes Italian: 1 hour, 55 minutes Portuguese: 1 hour, 40 minutes Russian: 1 hour, 5 minutes French: 45 minutes Greek: 45 minutes Dutch: 20 minutes Total 2015 running total Spanish: 76 hours, 55 minutes Japanese: 70 hours, 20 minutes Chinese: 60 hours, 5 minutes German: 21 hours, 30 minutes Russian: 20 hours, 5 minutes Italian: 15 hours, 25 minutes French: 12 hours, 20 minutes Portuguese: 11 hours, 0 minutes Greek: 3 hours, 35 minutes Dutch: 30 minutes Polish: 5 minutes I've now moved to Dallas and today (July 1st) I started my internal medicine residency, which means I'm not making any goals for this month. I'm by no means dropping language learning, it's just with medicine being my priority, I'm not sure yet what is reasonable to expect/shoot with my new medical responsibilities and study load. I'll be using foreign language study (and exercise) primarily for relaxing during my time off, not 'intense study,' so my progress will be slowed, especially in my weakest languages. log with interest, you have a fascinating desire to study 10 languages in a month, fairly consistently over the past few months, and I'm equally fascinated to see what the future holds for you, as well as to hear a little more about what motivates you to study all these languages, and why you chose to study so many as opposed to bunkering down on a few. 1 person has voted this message useful | |

I never had a "desire" per se to study 10 languages a month. I count "using" a language as study. The only languages
that have to study in the traditional sense are Chinese, Japanese, Greek, Polish, Dutch. The others, I may do some traditional study, but the rest is just using the language (speaking, watching videos, listening to music, reading, etc). I actually have always, bunkered down on a few, you're just now seeing the collective effect :). I would say this has been the breakdown of my "focus" per year. I just continue to do things in the languages I already learned to maintain them/continue to make slow progress, and to learn more about their culture. July 1st, I turned a new page in my life, and started my internal medicine residency. My first month I was thrown into
the intensive care unit. Long story short, when I'm home most days, I just eat, sleep, and then go back to the hospital, which has put language learning on the side. I now just do a bit when I have some time if I get home early or on a day off, but more of just a way to relax rather than making a concerted effort to learn. Usually being a bit busy helps me have a schedule, stay focused, and get more done. But working (average) 80 hours/week is too much to have a good study schedule. I have had plenty of time From 7/1/2014 (when I started logging) to 7/1/2015. So here I will add those hours, and that will be my goal to beat the next time I have a year straight that I feel I can make progress again on language learning. My goals during residency will be to read, watch movies, and improve the languages I have already started. Right now I'm reading short stories by Chekhov and reading Harry Potter in Russian. I also listen to Mexican radio from time to time, and watch videos on youtube in all of the languages that I've studied. So my limited July study hours are as follows: Japanese: 4 hours, 30 minutes (I watched some anime series, haven't found any that I really like yet. And I listen to Pimsleur when working out) Russian: 3 hours, 0 minutes (reading, some youtube, music) Spanish: 2 hours, 30 minutes (Mexican radio, speaking with native speakers here in Dallas) Chinese: 1 hour, 5 minutes (Really sad about this, but all my Chinese work in months past has been "study" and I'm too tired to keep up much of that. I haven't touched my assimil or done character exercises. I watch CCTV "growing up Chinese." Portuguese: 40 minutes (youtube) German: 40 minutes (youtube French: 30 minutes (music, youtube) Italian: 0 :( Total: 12 hours, 25 minutes :( 2015 running total: Spanish: 79 hours, 25 minutes Japanese: 74 hours, 50 minutes Chinese: 61 hours, 10 minutes German: 22 hours, 10 minutes Russian: 23 hours, 5 minutes Italian: 15 hours, 25 minutes French: 12 hours, 50 minutes Portuguese: 11 hours, 40 minutes Greek: 3 hours, 35 minutes Dutch: 30 minutes Polish: 5 minutes Edited by djc463 on 01 August 2015 at 7:23pm 1 person has voted this message useful | |

As mentioned in my last post, I think the past year (since I started logging, pre-residency) will be my hours to beat
for the future! This month I was again very busy at the hospital, but with my language study “free time,” I continued to do a lot of
reading and listening in Russian (movies, Chekhov’s stories, news, interviews about Ukrainian and Russian politics). I also decided to do a bit of Polish lessons, following my new wave of slavic interest. Russian: 4 hours, 0 minutes Spanish: 3 hours, 30 minutes Japanese: 3 hours, 5 minutes Chinese: 2 hours, 0 minutes Portuguese: 1 hour, 10 minutes Polish: 1 hour, 0 minutes German: 35 minutes French: 25 minutes Italian: 25 minutes 2015 Running total: Spanish: 82 hours, 55 minutes Japanese: 77 hours, 55 minutes Chinese: 63 hours, 10 minutes Russian: 27 hours, 5 minutes German: 22 hours, 45 minutes Italian: 15 hours, 50 minutes French: 13 hours, 15 minutes Portuguese: 12 hours, 50 minutes Greek: 3 hours, 35 minutes Polish: 1 hour, 5 minutes Dutch: 30 minutes 1 person has voted this message useful |
