Hello, and welcome to my log.
German B2 -> C1 German isn't the language I'm focusing the most on this semester, as I'd only need a lot of speaking and writing practice, something that I can't really do in a structural manner at this point. I am, however, taking classes and I will take advantage of every opportunity to get my writing corrected. Procrastinating in German is, however, something that I'm still going to keep doing... It is likely that I may "have to" study in Germany (i.e. somewhere else than Norway) due to the fact that I'll have to retake 1 or 2 years to get into any relevant Masters' programmes in Norway, due to the strict requirements (minimum number of credits in maths modules, etc.). Germany has a large population, and hence more unis, which in turn means more opportunities and a higher likelihood of finding some that accept my BEng. Hence, I might get the opportunity to improve my German a lot this year. Japanese ~B1 -> B2 Japanese is a language that I've been neglecting lately; in 2014, I have: - read Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire (1150-ish pages); - read JunkCity (some half-decent book I found on Amazon UK - no furigana whatsoever); - read the first Zero's Familiar book - watched one episode of Musisi (蟲師) - watched 10 or so parts (each 15 min) of a Final Fantasy XI let's play (jikkyou) - watched a Crash Bandicoot III let's play That I can actually list all the media that I've consumed in Japanese is a sign that I haven't had enough immersion in 2014. Hopefully I'll get to change that this year. Also, I'm planning to blow through the 4000 last cards of Core6k to regain lost vocabulary, although I won't start that before I'm done with this semester's exam period (=end of January) At the ned of the year, I'd like to get up to a level where I can easily procrastinate in Japanese. Basically, I'd like to be able to effortlessly enjoy Japanese media. Spanish A2 -> B1 I've been learning Spanish since the end of June, and I've read the two first HP books as well as Sal de mis sueños by Fernando Trujillo Sanz. In addition, I've recently been drilling grammar with Duolingo, which is an excellent way to get used to paying attention to genus agreement and so forth, which is, in my opinion, excellent practice. (I've been regarding Duo as a flashy toy, but it is actually pretty good, so if you're at an A1/A2 level, you should definitely give it a go.) At the end of the year, I'd like to be able to read and listen to Spanish with ease (=strong B1). Currently, reading is starting to become easier (I can get through 15- ish pages in an hour), but listening is still quite difficult. Spanish I'm still reading El último lapón by Olivier Truc. I still have to look up a lot of words, but it is definitely managable, and I feel that I am able to follow the story. In addition, I've been working on Duolingo (this week, I've gotten 1417 XP). I still mess up really simple things such as remembering to adapt the subject-verb agreement or remembering to make the genders agree and so on, which is a clear indication that it is still helpful to me. Spanish Duolingo XP this week: 574, leveled up to level 11 (my username is Styfer, btw) Reading progress: 18.8% or ~80 pages of El último lapón by Olivier Truc I also watched the beginning of a translated documentary (linked from someone elses log on here), and surprisinly, I could actually follow the narration without much issues. I consider watching a few of those during the inter-semester break (two weeks from now), since I'll be really busy with exams until then. German I read about 40-50 pages of Herbstmilch (Anna Wimschneider), and I still find it really hard to read compared to other books that I've read in German (loads of Krimis, some of the A Song of Ice and Fire books, etc.), mostly due to the dialect words and the (mostly dated) agriculture related vocabulary. Spanish Duolingo XP this week: 500 Reading progress: 12.3% or ~53 pages of El último lapón by Olivier Truc Due to exams, I didn't progress much this week. I did, however, watch a few "lets plays" in Spanish, and I'm starting to actually understand what I hear now. I still haven't found any good (active) gaming YT channels yet. (German gaming channels are the primary reason for my listening comprehension developing unbelievably fast in German.) My reading speed is still slow (about 10-15 pages per hour), but it's slowly getting better, and I only need to look up words 1-2 times per "page" (~16 kindle "positions") now. Japanese I will start with Anki (last 4000 cards of Core6k, starting with 20 cards a day, until the number of reviews get out of hand) at the end next week, when the exams are finally over - my last batch of exams at this uni, by the way. ^^ 1 person has voted this message useful | |

Spanish Duolingo XP this week: 400 Reading progress: 23.0% or ~98 pages of El último lapón by Olivier Truc I'm almost done with El último lapón, and I am still not sure which book to read next. If someone's got any recommendations (crime, fantasy, preferably books originally written in Spanish), I'd love to hear them! Japanese Core6k-2k progress: +60 (60/4000) I started with Core the day after my final exam, and I'll be aiming at doing 20 cards a day (at least until the number of reviews gets out of hand). Using a premade deck still feels funny - when you're making your own deck, you can easily associate a sentence with its source, which makes it easy to remember its meaning. In addition, you usually learn the meaning of the words when you add them to Anki, which pulls up the initial retention rate a lot. Spanish Duolingo XP this week: 770 Reading progress: - 9.9% or ~42 pages of El último lapón (Olivier Truc) - 49.2% or ~149 pages of La ciudad de las bestias (Isabel Allende) I'm planning to have some concrete daily goals throughout next week. There won't be too much this week because I got lectures and tutorials pretty much all day this week: - About 15 pages of La ciudad de las bestias; - 20 minutes of listening to native media - 50 Duolingo XP Japanese Core6k-2k progress: +140 (200/4000) My daily goals in Japanese for week 6: - 10 new Anki cards - 20 minutes of listening to native media - 3 NHK Easy articles or two "normal" news articles I'm hoping that I can fit in more time for language learning later in February or in March, when I'll be working on my Bachelor thesis (=when I can manage my own time much better) German Reading progress: 33% of Herbstmilch (Anna Wimschneider) Apart from that, I've been watching quite a few Youtube videos and participated in the German group that I've been in since last summer.
