Hello everybody. Nice to meet you.
After lurking for some time, and having read some interesting things on this forum, I finally have decided to register. My profile is somewhat misleading. I have tried to filling in, but I guess I have had some internet connection problems. I would like to write about my progress in the following languages: Chinese, Korean, German and Russian. I may add another language as well. Every month I will try to post more detailed information concerning my activities. 1 I take a look at the first, second, third and fourth week of 総纏めN1(語彙、漢字、文法、 読解) . 総纏めN1 is designed for those who wish to pass the JLPT N1 level or those who have finished the intermediate level (B2). Perhaps this book is more recommended for those people who live or have lived in Japan (or live in an environment where one can be in contact with the language every day) and who need to review a couple of topics. 文法編 The book is organized well and has large font, making it easy to locate this or that grammar point and also easy to read. However, the English, Chinese and Korean translations are insufficient, as the grammar points themselves are not explained in those languages. Moreover, I found that a few of the English translations were rather misleading, if not totally amiss. Some of them could have a much better translation, instead. Granted, the average N1 test-taker has or should have the ability to read and understand the N1 grammar explanations in Japanese, but this book claims to offer English, Chinese and Korean translations which comes up short on that task. Therefore, I would highly recommend this book only if you have already studied N1 grammar and you are looking for a material which is more concise and without many examples. For those who are studying for the first time in order to learn the grammar pattern, I would not recommend this book. 漢字編 There are too many kanji listed in one page. I don’t think this is a very effective way to study for the N1 if you are taking the exam for the first time. Perhaps it might be a good resource for those who are reviewing. I would not recommend anyone buying this book. 語彙編 If you have the old book (旧１級), it is not worth buying this book because the words selected are almost the same in the old version. Similarly to the Kanji’s version, there are lists of words divided into topics. Even though they are divided, I think there are too many words for those who are studying for N1 for the first time. The authors didn’t write about the nuance and usage of certain words, which is one ability desired for N1 level. I would not recommend anyone buying this book. 読解編 This is a good book for anyone trying to learn how to understand the reading section of the Japanese language test. Well laid out and easy to follow, it guides you step by step. This book is divided into 6 weeks, differently from the other three above which are divided into eight weeks. 聴解編 I haven’t taken a deep look yet, but it seems to be divided into 5 weeks only. One thing that most people complain about this book is that there are few exercises to practice the listening. It should have provided more tasks according to the folks. As for 総纏め series, I have taken a look at N3 and N2 and they seemed to be reasonable for me. As I pointed out, these series are more recommended for those who are reviewing for their target level. 2 I also have read about 敬語, more specifically about 尊敬語 and 美化語。 I have purchased few books concerning keigo and Japanese manners. I have read a bit of 謙譲語 which is currently subdivided into I and II categories by some linguists, but I am focusing more in尊敬語 this time. There are few examples that I have one of the books have mentioned such as: →×お死にになる →◯お亡くなりになる、亡くなられる →×御運転になる →◯運転なさる、運転される →◯おっしゃる →×お言いになる (着る) →◯お召しになる →×お着になる Etc. I have been using お亡くなりになる or 亡くなられる, but it is nice to read that お死にになる is not accepted in Japanese. I mean, because I don’t use it, it doesn’t mean this or that structure is not necessarily wrong. 3. I read some articles about the differences and usages of the following topics as well: 「の」・「こと」 and 「ある」・「いる」. For example, I have found this exercise that I should insert 「ある」and/or「いる」. １．死者が（ ） ２．死体が（ ） ３．あそこに珊瑚が（ ） ４．彼には３人の子が（ ）。 ５．彼には太郎という子が（ ）。 ６．むかしむかしあるところにお爺さんとお 婆さんが（ ）。（昔話） ７．そこにタクシーが（ ）。 ８．大きなトラックがそこに（ ）よ。 ９．ライオンの死骸が動物園に（ ）。 １０． 妻が（ ）。 １１． 妻子（ ）身 １２． 林の中に死体が （ ） １３． ドアの向こうに 幽霊が（ ） １４． すべての生き物 には魂が（ ） It is interesting because彼には３人の子がある(4) it is possible in Japanese, but not彼に は太郎という子が (5). Question number one is followed by いる, though in number two it should beある. Then, I started asking myself about the usage of both 「ある」and「いる」. Question number 13 and 14 were pretty interesting as well. As for 「の」and「こと」, I was asked by an acquaintance which one should I insert in the following exercise of hers. １．（お店で）「あの赤い（ ）を見せて ください。」 ２．（病院で）「しっかりして！私の（ ）が分かる？」 ３．「日曜は、子供と遊ぶ（ ）が好きで す。」 ４．「彼が結婚する（ ）を知っています か？」 ５．「アメリカに行った（ ）がありませ ん」 ６．「あ！ドアにカギをかける（ ）を忘 れた」 ７．「ここで、食事をする（ ）ができま すか？」 ８．このことは考えない（ ）にする ９．その問題を解決する（ ）になる １０．マレーシアに行った（ ）ことがある。 １１．（人）からひと言の愚痴も聞いた（ ）はない １２．僕の彼女は料理を作る（ ）が上手だ 。 １３．高校時代、みんなでキャンプをした（ ）は楽しかったな～。 Nothing that difficult to answer correctly, but I find difficult to explain Japanese grammar topics to my acquaintances… English I watched the four seasons of Game of Thrones in four days, starting on Friday 7th, the day I created my own log. Game of Thrones is one of those TV shows that I avoided watching for a long time. I usually avoid watching what my colleagues consider great American or British TV series, especially when there is so much hype building up around them. We all have different tastes and I just 99% of times dislike what they recommend me when it comes to shows in English. Despite having absolutely no desire to watch this show for a long time, I changed my mind on Friday and I gave it a try due to the overwhelming number of other acquaintances of mine who claimed indeed it was worth a watch. Surprisingly I have just finished watching the last episode of season four a few minutes ago. I have not read any of the books this series is based on, nor was I aware of the author until the release of this series. Honestly I also was not that much attracted to this series until almost the end of the second season as well. The series are a spectacular epic dealing with friction among the houses Baratheon, Lannister, Stark and Targaryen, and with the remaining noble houses such as Arryn, Greyjoy, Martell, Tully, Tyrell etc. The spectators could watch a great production values and outstanding scenarios: intense and exciting drama, nudism and sexual scenes, overwhelming combats in which battles resulted in lots of blood and gore; adding a computer generator images such as the Daenerys’ dragons. Betrayal, corruption, greed, love and murder collide in a mythical world of Westeros. Generally speaking, I think that the acting, production values and the storyline was pretty good. I would highly recommend this series to anyone who appreciates a well-produced, acted, and compelling fantasy story. Chinese I studied pinyin and listened to an audio for a few times each consonants and vowels in four different tones. Korean I studied how to read and write the Korean alphabet. I read about how batchim works and it seems to be pretty obvious to me. I read about the most common phonological changes and in which context they usually happen. @ Xenops, I don’t know in what level I am. Yokozuna Harumafuji often uses his nodo-wa and/or harite as a decoy to allow him to dive in low and execute a yori drive or an oshi attack. With more experience and hard training in order to try to speed up his footworks, Terunofuji can start to win such bouts. I mean, he has been winning too many times by retreating which doesn’t look nice for Yokozuna position. He is a former yotsu-zumo wrestler and this basho he has been using his old style to overpower his opponents. I wish we could see Kakuryu using more his power to outmaneuver or overpower his opponents on the belt as in the past, instead of any retreating techniques. 東横綱・2日馬富士関 (伊勢ヶ濱部屋)が、 西小結勢関（伊勢ノ海部屋)に 上手投げで勝ち、 3勝2敗になりました。 勢関（伊勢ノ海部屋）は、 1勝4敗になりました。 Harumafuji’s speed is very impressive. Gyouji gave it to Ozeki Kotoshogiku, but the monoi was called and the decision was reversed. Ozeki is in deep trouble this basho standing at 2-3. I am wondering how much longer will he remain as an Ozeki? Kisenosato was lackadaisical today. Aoiyama lacks in agility; therefore, his opponents should use a bit of lateral movement. Tochiozan lacks in flexibility which make him often lose his bouts in case of any lateral or fast movements. 西関脇 逸ノ城関 (湊部屋)が、 東小結 豪風関（尾車部屋）に叩き込みで勝ち、 3勝2敗になりました。 豪風関（尾車部屋）は、 1勝4敗になりました。 小さい相手にどう取るのかと思ったが、 良く見て叩き込んで逸ノ城の勝ち。 逸ノ城は落ち着いている。 明日か ら中盤戦なので、 もっと頑張ってもらいたい。 I have no idea what Takekaze is supposed to do against Ichinojo who showed his calmness during the bout. The greatest Yokozuna Hakuho simply was not prepared for that combination of techniques and lost his balance. He's human. When was the last time Hakuho lost within the first 6 days of tournament as a Yokozuna?! This bout was predictable. Harumafuji once again used his usual sidestepping tachiai, moving to his left to secure a left handed outside belt grip. Kaisei was an easy target for this attack due to his lack of speed. I bet Harumafuji will use his sidestepping tachian at least once again during this basho. 東大関 琴奨菊関(佐渡ヶ嶽部屋)が、 東小結 豪風関（尾車部屋）に寄り切りで勝ち、 3勝3敗になりました。 豪風関（尾車部屋）は、 1勝5敗になりました。 Kotoshogiku beat Takekaze easily today but their rivalry still stands at Kotoshogiku 12-14 Takekaze, if I am not wrong. 西大関 稀勢の里関(田子ノ浦部屋)が、 東前頭筆頭 栃煌山関(春日野部屋）に 押し出しで勝ち、 5勝1敗になりました。 栃煌山関（春日野部屋）は、 1勝5敗になりました。 Kisenosato clearly won but I guess the Gyoji did not see Tochiozan stepping out from his angle. 西大関・2 豪栄道関(境川部屋)が、 西前頭筆頭 安美錦関 （伊勢ヶ濱部屋）に叩き込みで負け、 3勝3敗になりました。 安美錦関（伊勢ヶ濱部屋）は、 3勝3敗になりました。 安美錦のはたき込み、巧すぎる！ 実力者ですね。 その前の豪栄道のはたき、 同じはたきでも先に安易にしてしまう、 それが敗因。 Goeido put his head too down and the alert Aminishiki simply slapped him down. Goeido is in trouble again this basho having three losses so far. Better wake up from tomorrow or he will not make kachikoshi. His fans must be wondering what is going with him, but there is nothing to expect much from him. If not his knees injuries, Aminishiki would have been fighting with much more effort. Some other bouts of the day: Aoiyama has more power than Ikioi who should have tried attacking with some lateral movements. I guess it is not that easy because of Aoiyama’s long arms He put his head down and the alert Aoiyama slapped him down. Takarafuji has been improving a bit lately. He won even though we went backwards today. Toyohibiki’s sumo is predictable since he uses his oshi attack almost all the times and any lateral movement make his lose his precarious balance. He often ends up falling forward. Chiyootori put up a good fight against Terunofuji. It was one of the best bouts of the day. Chiyootori defended pretty well. Both rikishi are similar in a way: they are power, heavily built, and neither one has a lot of good footwork. I don't like the looks of Terunofuji's right ankle or whatever he injured. At least he can walk on it. Maybe he will be out of this tournament. Georgian Tochinoshin has massive thighs and I think it helps him to get a good balance. He fought against Jokoryu and won in a nage contest. I am looking forward to his kachikoshi. I am still wondering why Endo tried a tsuppari attack against the shortest rakish of the top division, Toyonoshima? It doesn't work unless you have a lot of power in your thrusts such as former Ozeki Chiyotaikai in his strongest days. When Toyonoshima started walking through it, he should have tried going straight to the belt. He ridiculously got pushed off the dohyo. Endo should rethink about his losing bouts and also gain more power. Kyokutenho quickly got a solid right hand outside grip and from there it was easy, as Chiyotairyu really do not fight well in a yotsu-zumo contest. Kyokutenho continues to amaze sumo fans because of his score (5-1) and because he won his 900th victory in his career. How old is he? 40? 魁聖ー栃ノ心 In a belt contest, Tochinoshin overpowered Kaisei . I am not sure how much painful is his knee injury, but I would like to see him getting higher ranking and fighting against Yokozuna and Ozeki. In fact, Tochinoshin is so strong right now that it makes you wonder if he was struggling for a long time with a nagging injury that finally is not bothering him anymore. His upper body strength was the difference today. Tochinoshin had been komusubi 3 times, first in 2010, before Ichinojo came to Japan. He is able to beat anyone in sanyaku. Some people who are new to sumo, don't know much about him, because he was absent from makuuchi for 7-8 tournaments. He's got a lot of confidence after his surgery. He has a good balance between upper and lower body. I think he should practice some tsuppari and oshi attacks, but not rely too much on belt contests; otherwise he will be very predictable against the top fighters of the top division. 西関脇 逸ノ城関 (湊部屋)が、西小結 勢関 （伊勢ノ海部屋）に上手投げで勝ち、 4勝3敗になりました。 勢関（伊勢ノ海部屋）は、 1勝6敗になりました。 逸ノ城は先場所の借りを返した。 先場所投げで負けたので、 投げで勝ちたかったと逸ノ城。 上手投げで勝った。 Ichinojo has showed again that he has a good nage technique. He is a candidate to become an Ozeki in a near future as since as he doesn’t get injured. He can use his size and strength combined with his techniques. Even though Ikioi didn’t fight badly at all, he lost and dropped to 1-6. He looks sharp so far this basho, looking at his 7 bouts. Perhaps he might have chances to win his first tournament as Yokozuna. It is still too early to say, though. Even though it was not a left handed outside grip, it was enough to overpower the small Takekaze. Hakuho has been using an extra shove in some of his bouts which is totally unnecessary for him who is a Yokozuna. Such behavior reminds me former Yokozuna Asashoryu. Hakuho is currently the strongest rikishi and probably the strongest ever.
