The top-selling crime novels are pretty easy to follow, since they contain mostly
common vocabulary (as well as some crime-related words ofc). The Song of Ice and Fire books are written pretty straightforwardly in German, without an exaggarated use of old-fashioned expressions. Of course, you'd encounter a lot of words that you wouldn't have much use of elsewhere as well as the polite 2nd person pronoun Ihr.
