Oh, I'm very sorry, chokofingrz! I totally forgot that you had already posted your contribution to the challenge. I have already awarded you your medal of honour in the first post.

Your ideas for helping beginners are good, Cristina. I didn't think about that. Of course, you don't have to write an elaborate essay about the movie if you're just a beginner. Answering the five questions Cristina mentioned will suffice completely.

Anyway, the important part is watching a Russian movie. Posting about it in this thread only serves the purpose of letting everybody know about it.

By the way, I've got exciting news! My new flatmate is a fluent Russian speaker from Kyrgyzstan, so I will get to practise my Russian a lot in the future! :) I'll tell you more about her in my next log entry.

That reminds me, I have a Kyrgyz film, called Свет-Аке (The Light Thief), but I haven't watched it yet.

Has anyone else been having problems with the forum? I tried to post yesterday, but it
wouldn't work. I've only been able to log on and post twice in the past 3 or 4 weeks.

I may need to drop out if it continues. I wasn't able to complete the April challenge
because of it.

I have constant problems but I will be around for as long as it is possible. Hopefully something will be done (is something being done about those problems?).

I will also be around as long as possible, but yes, I have also had lots of problems with the forum lately, so I
have started posting at the polydog forum too. There are several people with an interest in Russian there,
and it has got a lot of nice features. My number one forum is, and will always be HTLAL, but better safe than
sorry. I want to have an alternative community in case this one fails, and I intend to back up some of my
things there.

I don't think this kind of patriotism is appropriate here, but I don't want to start a political discussion.

Suffice it to say that I think we should commemorate the victims of the Second World War in silent remembrance and not with showy military parades. 70 years after the war we should finally have learned the lesson that all human beings should coexist in peace instead of celebrating the glorious, victorious fatherland.

This is especially the case when the remembrance of the past is being instrumentalized for justifying today's politics and politicians. What's happening in Ukraine right now is downright terrible and if Putin should really celebrate this day on Crimea, it's like he is spitting the international community in their face.

I do like Russian people and culture, but I don't like this kind of nationalism that's on the rise there right now.

So, remembrance - yes. Celebrating and congratulating - no.

I agree. I am sure QiuJP meant it in the best possible way, but these days I am sticking intensively to my mantra that you can hate the politicians of a country and still love the people. Let us be careful not to bring up topics which might have political implications. I like feeling friendly towards everyone here.

There are several ways of looking at День Победы. Currently our
government using it to strengthen its position in Crimea, but that
doesn't cancel the initial meaning of this day. It's quite possible that
if the history went the other way there'd be no Russians and Russian
language by now.
I'm not saying you should celebrate it, but congratulations aren't
doing anything bad to anyone.
For me 9h of May is the day when the greatest threat to the very idea
of Russia was finally eliminated. It has nothing to do with our
government's actions.
P.S. Спасибо, QiuJP.
