In September I read 1164 pages and watched 42 films.

While I am not a big believer in sudden jumps in comprehension, I noticed a significant improvement in my listening comprehension this month. I am now at a point where I watch most movies with a very high rate of understanding. The exception remains non-dubbed films, which is not surprising. I need to start throwing more German movies into my mix. Perhaps some Herzog? I have been avoiding watching some of the classic German films until now because I wanted to really be able to enjoy them in the original, and not just use them as a learning exercise.

Reading with it's much greater vocabulary range remains much more challenging. I started China Miéville's Kraken, but put it aside as I was too much like translation and not like reading. I read and enjoyed Kim Stanley Robinson's scifi/hipster epic 2312. Very nice book, but certainly a challenging read. Wanting something much easier I polished off Jurassic Park over a week.

As can be seen from the graphs I am getting close to my goal for 2014 of reaching 20000 pages and 600 films.

Why is this not surprising?

Because non-dubbed shows are more likely to use idioms, have a broader range of accents, use regional vocabulary etc.

Lately I've been getting a lot out of listening to Deutschlandfunk: http://www.deutschlandfunk.de/.

A excellent radio station if you want to keep up with German news and culture. A variant of PBS for Germany.

The cult series, Tatort, raised a storm of praise and dislike amongst the Twitterati this week with it's latest episode TATORT - 12.10.2014: Im Schmerz geboren, which people have compared to being a cross between Shakespeare and Tarantino.

Not sure I would go that far, but it was a fun and unusual episode, and is sure to win some German TV prizes.

I just achieved my film viewing goal for 2014 (to reach 600 films) and as a reward watched my favourite German film Der Himmel über Berlin (1987).

This is one of the most beautiful films I have seen, and captures beautifully the divided city before the Wall fell. The script written by Wenders and Handke is quite lyrical, and I have promised myself that I would not watch it before my German had advanced enough to appreciate it.

Quite a few of the scenes near the Wall are filmed very close to my house, and its fascinating to see the Wall in all it's ugliness so close to where I am sitting now.
