Personal log of M. Medialis
I had been sitting for hours in the cold, waiting for The Great Sai-Lon Tsu's annual new year's speech (read his 2011 speech here, and the 2012 speech here). When he finally arrived, he just sat down with a quirky smile and scribbled down a little 17-syllable Japanese poem on a scroll. He then rose and walked away, leaving the rest of us perplexed.
I've been struggling for days to translate the poem into English. Was he just teasing us or is there a profound wisdom hidden behind the letters? I hope the intended message was not lost in translation:

Personal log of M. Medialis
Introduction
A new year and a new log! This time I'm a member of Team MIR and I hope this can turn out to be the best language learning year ever! :D
So who am I? I'm a 25 year old newly graduated computer engineer. On my free time I like to play the piano and learn languages.
I am a big fan of the Listening-Reading method (L-R), various kinds of Scriptorium, and learning from parallel texts and native materials.
Here are my language learning logs from the previous years:
M. Medialis' 2010 TAC Log - Team K
M. Medialis' 2011 TAC Log - Team KEN
M. Medialis' 2012 TAC Log - Team Sputnik
Let's go!
My only goal for this year is to keep the language passion alive - wherever that will take me. So I may end up studying Japanese the whole year (maybe I can finally reach the magical Japanese Basic Fluency in 2013!?) - or maybe I'll finally get a Russian private tutor, or maybe start studying Korean or Mandarin.
It's exciting to start a new year - and I hope you'll join in me in my intergalactic cruise! :)

I am hoping that you will go with the Russian tutor, and hope for frequent visits from you this year. May it indeed be your best ever!

Hello, fellow teammate! I hope you finally reach your goal of basic fluency in Japanese
and that your Russian studies go well. Hopefully you'll have the time to try out Korean
or Mandarin as well :D.
Sai-Lon Tsu's poem is something we should all keep in mind this year, too.
Good luck! :)

This is the moment I've been waiting for to start my studies afresh, brush aside any remaining dark clouds of regret, and drink anew from that running stream of language learning wisdom that spills down the mountain once a year. Finally...with hushed wee bairns and wide-mouthed owl-eyed expectation in the crowd, the Great Sai-Lon Tsu welcomes in 2013 with a new riddle. For are we not all indeed hanging upside-down in our little lives, depending on cosmic perspective, yet growing forever firmer roots in a revolving world of cultural dreams and new discoveries. I will meditate deeply and take courage in the wise words of our great sifu over the coming year...

Good luck with your language journey this year. It's somewhat refreshing to see someone start the Challenge with the simple goal of keeping the passion alive at any cost, it's great. Good luck with your 日本語 and русский язык and I will see you over at Team MIR! :)
