The 'stuffy and overly officious sales clerk' you refer to is an almost legendary

hmm...well, let's see if they can ship to about 60 miles due west of London. I can also relate to "criminally overpriced" from my so far single visit to the physical store. It was certainly a fun place to browse in however. 1 person has voted this message useful | |||

Well I should in all fairness report that my 4 books from Grant and Cutler at Foyles
have now arrived. From placing the order to day of arrival was 13 days. While admitting that I only used the free second-class post, they certainly didn't manage to break any records, considering the books were all marked as in stock. No comparison with the sometimes amazingly swift deliveries from Amazon (and I never pay for postage there - with Amazon UK that is). What is slightly more annoying is the lack of an automatic advisory email when the books were dispatched. I had to send a second email to them (yesterday), in order to be told that they were dispatched last Friday. So service could be better, but it seems that they do eventually deliver. The Waterstones on Gower St near UCL (probably just a 15 min walk from Foyles) is also
excellent. It used to be an independent and has a lot of academic titles, so is a bit more interesting than other Waterstones. I tend to get the two a bit confused, but I suspect the language section is not quite as extensive as at Foyles. 1 person has voted this message useful | |||

Reminds me that I've walked past what I think was called a German Bookshop not a
million miles from that area. I didn't have time to investigate at the time. Must have a look for it next time I'm in the area. After praising Amazon, I should add that sometimes their book descriptions aren't 100% accurate. What I thought was a Latin-German parallel text of "De Bello Gallico" by Reclam arrived today, and turns out not to be a parallel text, but Latin with notes in German. Not useless, but not what I thought I'd ordered (since I know that Reclam do do parallel texts for classical works). :-( (Just checked, and the preview clearly shows it as parallel text, and it's probably from a completely different edition, not the one being sold here. :-( ). Does anyone have any recommendations for a book shop in Scotland to be able to
physically shop in? My friend and I stumbled across Foyles massive FL department in September and loaded up with what we could afford. But I won't get back until this September. My local Waterstones, while a fab wee shop with excellent staff, has a small, half filled, waist high shelving labelled Foreign Languages but consisting for not much more than the odd dictionary in Arabic or French and a couple of textbooks. I want to be able to browse and get a stiff neck from trying to read the spines! The only 'big' bookshop I knew of was the Borders on Buchanan Street in Glasgow but that's long gone. 1 person has voted this message useful |
