Ah, ePagine is another excellent find. Thank you again, geoffw. I haven't actually tried buying anything yet, mostly because (1) I have a backlog of interesting reading in French right now, and (2) Adobe DRM always gives me a bit of a headache. At least ePagine seems to have some DRM-free books and books watermarked with the purchaser's name, both of which are easier than Adobe's headaches. The selection at ePagine is much smaller than Amazon.fr (they don't have Le Pont de la rivière Kwaï at ePagine, for example, which I've been looking for in eBook format). But it's much better than Amazon.com's thin list of old French classics and dubious self-published titles. One really great find at ePagine is Angle Mort ("Blindspot"), which appears to be a magazine of literary science-fiction without any DRM. You can either read the stories online for free, or purchase ebooks in your favorite format with some nice extras, including interviews with authors. Thanks for all the advice, guys! I never realised what an uphill struggle it was to get hold of French resources in the US until last week. I always assumed, perhaps somewhat naïvely, that French companies and organisations would jump at a chance to promote and circulate the lingua franca to all parts of the globe in place of the ubiquitous lingua anglica, especially given the estimated 1-2 million French speakers in the US (e.g. New England, Missouri, Louisiana) and the 7+ million in Canada. I guess I'll keep on trying and keep my fingers crossed that, as geoffw reassures us, persistence will pay off.

Geoff: Sorry I was away and off Internet over the weekend. It's possible I mislead you. I using a UK CC and have a UK Amazon account, which unfortunately blocks me from Amazon.de. I think UK CCs work fine here for other stores (the work for Amazon.de if you haven't already associated the card with another Amazon store), but that could be because it's an EU card. I can do a direct debit at any shop here in Berlin with my UK card, even though store owners often don't believe this is possible until it's demonstrated. For German ebooks as far as I can tell the selection on Amazon.de and Amazon.uk are identical, which is why I haven't bothered to change accounts yet, but I haven't done an exhaustive survey so it I could be wrong. emk or whoever it may concern: I want to start reading epubs in French on the iPad and I'd be glad to find a pop-up dictionary, like the one you can find for English in iBooks itself. Is there any available for iBooks? Or is there another reader you guys could recommend with this feature?

Kindle has a pop-up dictionary, but it's a not bilingual dictionary so you'll get the definition in the target language

That could be useful for French anyway. I found this iTranslate Reader which claims to have built-in French dictionary, but I haven't tried it yet.
