I would like to jump in here if I may to point out that for those that may find it useful
there is some software called RTMPGUI available for free online and it includes free,
high quality streams of many channels in many different languages. There are a ton of
French channels, including some of the state TV channels such as France 2, France 3 etc
as well as having Belgian channels that also broadcast in French. I am not associated
with this software in any way. I just thought it might be useful for others as it has
been for me.
P.S. I've just counted and there are 31 French channels in the list that I have at the
moment.

Useful to know, thanks. Can you get captions (for the hearing impaired; that is, in French) for any of the
channels?

I don't want to hijack this thread but I don't think there are any options for captions
so I assume the only ones available would be any that are presented by default on screen.

Oh, cool! I'll look into it.
I just received my VoilaTV box today. Three wires (internet, TV, power), one remote control, and the power button, and I had French TV in less than 5 minutes.
Flipping through the channels, there's a bunch of interesting news channels, a black screen on the sports channel and movie channel, a kids' cartoon, a really bad dubbed drama (possibly from Latin America), a promising business channel, a trivia game show, some music videos, and a huge list of radio channels. And advertisements in French!
I'm really delighted, especially because I can just leave it on and surf channels. But I get the impression that this isn't what you'd call premium channels. The backbone here is TF1, France 2–5 and France Ô, with a few other good channels and a bunch of random cruft. The most mystifying is myzen.tv, which is nothing but nature shots and an over-medicated female voice explaining why it's important to be calm and relaxed.
I'm going to bug customer service about the two black channels if they're not working by this evening. (The site mentioned that some programs are occasionally blacked out.) Customer service has been extremely helpful and competent, and 100% native French.
And to think—here I am being picky, when yesterday I would have been delighted to any French TV at all. :-)
I also woke up early and plowed through the final third of L'Étranger. More on that later.

I like buying things from French companies. There's always the possibility that something goes wrong, which lets me practice my French in real-world conditions, with tech support chats, noisy phone lines, and all that good stuff. :-)
Here's VoilaTV telling me that the two missing channels should be back soon:
Quote:
Valerie: Bon visionnage ! :) |

While spend my afternoon installing programmer tools, I can hear a program in the background on France 2. There appears to be a program called Les secrets de beauté de Cleopatre with a woman dressed in an ancient Egyptian costume. I'm not paying enough attention to actually figure out what's going on.

As I write, France 5 is showing a discussion between four authors on La grande librairie:
- Cédric Villani (Théorème vivant)
- Bernard Werber (Troisième Humanité)
- Abha Dawesar (sensorium)
- Patrick Deville (Peste & Choléra)
Given my interest in science fiction, this is pretty darn cool. It's certainly not what I'd expect on US television. But my brain is about to shut down hard and my French comprehension is getting shaky. Time to sleep.

Merci bien emk !! C'est juste tout ce dont j'avais besoin ! Des romans français contemporaires ! Je suis ravi d'avoir beaucoup à lire de fiction scientifique.

Experiences in French
Things seen on VoilaTV, which was playing in the background:
- A long debate about gay marriage.
- An hour-long show on American superhero comics.
- Some kids cartoons.
- A retrospective of the American presidential election.
- Another program talking about a book. The French seem to have a bunch of these.
- Puppets of George W. Bush and Bill Clinton, the latter muttering, "Mon dieu, il est con."
Things seen on Verbling:
- 3 people whose audio and video were so bad as to be completely unusable.
- 1 Algerian Christian who was trying to convert people to his variety of the faith via elaborate intellectual arguments in French. The audio was almost unusable.
- 1 cool guy from Morocco who wanted to know if it was possible to rent in New York City for $300/month. The audio was very bad, but sufficient. I hope to speak with him again.

Learning vocabulary from context: an exercise
Can you puzzle out semi-accurate definitions for the two boldfaced words?
Quote:
Aujourd'hui, je débute au ski et, voulant impressionner l'homme que je convoite, je fonce entre deux poteaux assez proches l'un de l'autre. En fait, ils étaient là pour signaler l'immense trou duquel on a dû me sortir. VDM
Today, I go skiing for the first time, and wanting to impress the man that I convoite, I force my way between two poteaux that were pretty close together. In fact, they were there to mark the immense hole that I had to get pulled out of. |

If you've ever been skiing, this should be pretty easy.
Not every unknown word is so easy to guess from context. But if you multiply this short paragraph by 500 pages per month (the volume of reading needed to keep up with the Super Challenge), you're going to puzzle out of a lot of words from context. Read! (And listen!) And never forget how much an advantage you get when you read about your favorite subjects.
