I didn't use it as a total beginner (I started with Pimsleur) but I think it would work very well. If I start up another language at some point I plan on doing MT first. The vocabulary is extremely limited, so any useful speaking isn't really going to happen afterwards until more words are learned, but there's a nice grammar skeleton they set up. They teach about 2 or 3 school quarters worth of grammar (I'd guess) but probably only about 2 weeks worth of vocab.
